Goodbye 2022, Hello 2023

Goodbye 2022, Hello 2023. First of all, I wish all of you have a prosperous, healthy & happy year in 2023. In the amazing Christmas and New Year holiday, there is no better time to review 2022 & plan forward.

Some of you may say, “Dr. Charm, you are everywhere. What are you doing exactly?” I would like to share my platform model namely #CASE #團學創企 with you. The main purpose of my CASE model is to co-create successful business cases with 4 key interconnected stakeholders in the #ecosystem by making use of innovation and technologies #攜手共創.

Really proud of the Smart Airport #SmartAirport team of AAHK. They won the Award not only because of their innovativeness but also their passion and positive attitude to create seamless customer journey for local and foreign travellers. While the pandemic has been hitting us big, this innovation has given us a booster and confidence to fly again. Thanks to the leadership from Chris Au Young and the great effort from his bright teammates.

Congratulations to the team and really proud of you all. I am honoured to be one of the final judges for the HKICTA Smart Mobility Award organized by GS1 Hong Kong #GS1HK. This project won the Grand Award of Smart Mobility first. Then they competed with the Grand Awardees from other 7 Awards. Finally they won the Award of the Year. Thanks for Anna Lin and her GS1HK teammates and congratulations to all of us contributed in this year’s HKICTA #SmartMobility Award.

Joined the GS1 Hong Kong Summit 2022 today in my capacity as the President of Internet of Things #IoT Industry Advisory Council https://lnkd.in/gZ3M-NrZ. Thanks for Anna Lin‘s invitation.

Really like the main theme “Enabling Growth through #IDD“. Guess what IDD means? We may recall the old memory of IDD which means the International Direct Dialing. IDD today means #Innovation, #Disruption and #DigitalTransformation. I learned a lot more about ESG, Digital Transformation, New Retail, Data Analytics, eCommerce, Trade Finance, and MetaVerse from many speakers and panelists like Rico Lau#Lawsgroup, Louis Mah#Maxims, Samuel lau#KerryLogistics, Anson Bailey (eMBA)#KPMG, Nelson Chow#HKMA, Sandy Tan#DBS, and many others today.

More importantly, met many good friends f2f whom we haven’t seen each other physically for the last 3 years. Really felt great and warm to see many bright entrepreneurs and leaders such as Dr. Michael Chan #CafeDeCoral, Lucia Cheung#HKIM, Danny Shum#Ztore#TVB, Keith Wu#Fulum, Crystal Pang#Pickups, Vincent SoHenry Yeung#RTIA.

I am also very happy to see my elite #CUHK#EMBA students like Vincent Wong, Edmund Chan, Mae Chen there. Really grateful that my students have started engaging more with the #innovation and #technology#ecosystem as I often encourage them to do more. Well done.

CUHK EMBA 2022: Corporate Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Today is the Moment of the Truth #MOT for my CUHK EMBA students in my Corporate Innovation and Entrepreneurship course. After 8 days of intensive lectures, case discussion, guest speakers’ sharing, they were presenting their group projects.

The project required my students to study a company’s corporate innovation from 6 different perspectives or dilemmas that they learned from my classes and offsite dinners as well 😄😋.
1. Old Economy vs Digital Economy
2. Customer Centricity vs Innovation
3. Strategy Execution vs Searching for Innovation
4. Internal Innovation vs Open Collaboration
5. Entrepreneurship vs Intrapreneurship
6. Experience Driven vs Data Driven

Really grateful to have such a group of elite executives and professionals in my class with strong learning attitude and positive, open and growth mindset. I can feel and see from the quality, innovativeness and teamwork of their final projects. Thank you so much for their great effort.

Lives are Gradually Back to Normal After Covid

After almost 3 years of the Covid, our lives are gradually back to normal, at least, close to it. I am so grateful that I could meet with my EMBA students not only f2f in class (with masks), but also in causal dinners (without masks and with smiles) as well. I had a few dinners with different teams in my Corporate Innovation course in the last few weeks. Apart from discussing about innovation and technology, we talked about almost everything. I have a very good diversity in my class this year with business owners, corporate leaders from different industries, entrepreneurs and professionals like doctors, lawyers, accountants and engineers. That is an excellent mix to learn innovation. Really enjoyed our gatherings and understood a lot more about their lives and works. We all learned a lot more than in the classrooms. What a class! “Bank of Future” – FinTech Week Hong Kong 2022

I ran into “Bank of Future” today in the 2022 FinTech Week Hong Kong #FTWHK https://lnkd.in/gNF–y47. It was wonderful and amazing to see many old and new friends in the FinTech space. More eye-opening innovations from our FinTech ecosystem. Our innovation have not been stopped by the pandemic.

“Pushing Boundaries, Reaping Benefits” is this year’s main theme. I saw traditional financial services are doing exactly like this. Transunion’s “Beyond Credit”, DBS’s “More like a startup, less like a bank”. How about FinTech startups? #DimOrder looks like a POS system and now well beyond POS to solve finance related pain points for their supply chain. They got accepted to the world’s best accelerator, #YCombinator. Arguably, Y Combinator is the factory of Unicorns. DimOrder is our Hong Kong’s honour and proud. #Diginex goes beyond ESG reporting to solve the financing issues of SMEs. And more beyond everything plus the X factor of MetaVerse.

Thanks for Victor Yim #Cyberport, Crystal Fok #HKSTP, Jessica Liu #FTAHK and many other ecosystem enablers to make these all happened. More financial services incumbents are open their doors to collaborate with startups while the government and regulators have new policy and fundings for the fintech ecosystem in Hong Kong.

New initiatives on #CBDC, #CDI, #DigitalAsset, blockchain-based and AI applications plus #MetaVerse with infinite imagination are emerging. The financial services companies in this decade is going to be revolutionized. Or we should ask ourselves “What is a financial services company in 2030?” Stay tuned for more.

Do you know which companies in Hong Kong are the most innovative ones? More importantly, what can we learn from them? I am so excited to let you know that we are ready to announce the result of our first-ever Hong Kong Corporate Innovation Index CII on Nov 23, 2022.

After more than one-year work on CII, we have identified the most innovative enterprises and SMEs in Hong Kong based on our innovation framework. We will also announce a Composite Index for Corporate Innovation in Hong Kong so that we can compare our improvement in the future years. Don’t miss it. Our aim is not so much on the rankings and awards, but more on identifying the gaps and empowering our Hong Kong companies to innovate more effectively. A series of seminars and workshops will follow. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to contribute to this project as it is impactful, meaningful and influential to Hong Kong competitiveness and sustainable growth.

In the past year, we have done a series of tasks and in fact iterations of tasks, e.g. research, pilot study, interviews, survey, analysis, expert groups, etc., to get these results ready. It was not an easy job as you can imagine. Appreciate all the effort and hard work from our CUHK teammates, all steering committee members, all organizing committee members, all sponsors, all supporting organizations and certainly all the companies who participated in our survey and discussions.

Please join us in the afternoon of Nov 23, 2022 to learn more about corporate innovation. Apart from the CUHK senior management, we will have 2 discussion panels. One is on corporate innovation and another one is on SME innovation. We will talk about the findings from our survey and then discuss with the panelists. Invited Ryan Lai @FoodPanda to Join my EMBA Class

Just finished another two fruitful days with my CUHK EMBA students. I continued to talk about corporate innovation. Appreciate Ryan Lai#foodpanda to join us in the weekend and share his corporate innnovation and entrepreneurship experience with us. It was a fruitful and insightful session. Thanks Ryan.

I met Ryan when he was running his startup and now he is heading the foodpanda Hong Kong. He is bringing in his entrepreneurial experience to run foodpanda. We can all see the great achievements of Ryan and his company in the last few years.

It is often hard to balance execution and innovation. From Ryan, we all learnt a lot how to acheive results and at the same time to keep innovating like an enterprenur.

We have discussed a few key questions for the success of corporate innovation. Thanks my good students like Edmund Chan, Dop Sun to ask sensible questions as well.
1. What can corporates learn from the Startup Cycle?
2. How to empower staff to innovate with the support from experienced leaders and corporate resources?
3. How to prioritize and decide when and how to start a new business?

My goal is to empower my EMBA students to be entrepreneurial leaders to manage and grow their businesses. Will continue this mission in my journey of nurturing more future elite leaders for our society.

Watched my MBA Students Present their Group Projects on Innovation Management

My CUHK MBA students have presented their group projects on innovation management today. Really appreciate their great effort and teamwork on preparing the presentation.

Pleased to see that my class has a good mix of international, mainland and Hong Kong students. They were from Europe, US, Russia, India, Japan, mainland China and Hong Kong. That diversity brought in a lot of innovatoon, energy and in fact fun as well. Thanks for Grace Liang and her CUHK MBA teammates to select such a high quality of elite leaders to be my students.

I asked my students to treat the group presentation as a MVP (Minimum Viable Product) of their projects where I can give them feedback and they can make changes before submitting their next MVP which is the final report. That helped them practise MVP approach to innovate progressively and iteratively with customer-first mindset.

Inspiring my students to think out of the box and innovate for sustainable growth is my goal. A few students shared with me that they really got inspired and learned something valuable to their work and career. With that, all my preparation and efforts are worth it. Will keep up to improve and empower more innovative leaders for our society.
