What a week for me last week! I shared my experience on corporate innovation and entrepreneurship with my EMBA, MBA and then Mini-MBA students in a week. That was a very packed but very fruitful and meaningful week for me.

Let me share a bit more on my Mini-MBA class as it was interesting. Our Mini-MBA programme is a series of one-day modules for business executives professionals and entrepreneurs to upskill themselves under their busy schedule. Our main theme is Innovative Leadership. My class this year had a very good mix of executives and professionals from commercial and public sectors like #HKHA Hong Kong Hospital Authority, entrepreneurs from startups like #Aerosim #BioMed, and team leaders from #HKSTP. We mixed them up for class exercises and discussion. That indeed was the best way to learn innovation as diversity is a key success factor for great innovation. Appreciate their active participation and sharing thoughts. Great class! Also, big thank to HKSTP Garland Chow and Gallen Leung to encourage amd support their #startups to join this programme.

Just finished another two fruitful days with my CUHK EMBA students. I continued to talk about corporate innovation. Appreciate Ryan Lai#foodpanda to join us in the weekend and share his corporate innnovation and entrepreneurship experience with us. It was a fruitful and insightful session. Thanks Ryan.

I met Ryan when he was running his startup and now he is heading the foodpanda Hong Kong. He is bringing in his entrepreneurial experience to run foodpanda. We can all see the great achievements of Ryan and his company in the last few years.

It is often hard to balance execution and innovation. From Ryan, we all learnt a lot how to acheive results and at the same time to keep innovating like an enterprenur.

We have discussed a few key questions for the success of corporate innovation. Thanks my good students like Edmund ChanDop Sun to ask sensible questions as well.
1. What can corporates learn from the Startup Cycle?
2. How to empower staff to innovate with the support from experienced leaders and corporate resources?
3. How to prioritize and decide when and how to start a new business?

My goal is to empower my EMBA students to be entrepreneurial leaders to manage and grow their businesses. Will continue this mission in my journey of nurturing more future elite leaders for our society.

My CUHK MBA students have presented their group projects on innovation management today. Really appreciate their great effort and teamwork on preparing the presentation.

Pleased to see that my class has a good mix of international, mainland and Hong Kong students. They were from Europe, US, Russia, India, Japan, mainland China and Hong Kong. That diversity brought in a lot of innovatoon, energy and in fact fun as well. Thanks for Grace Liang and her CUHK MBA teammates to select such a high quality of elite leaders to be my students.

I asked my students to treat the group presentation as a MVP (Minimum Viable Product) of their projects where I can give them feedback and they can make changes before submitting their next MVP which is the final report. That helped them practise MVP approach to innovate progressively and iteratively with customer-first mindset.

Inspiring my students to think out of the box and innovate for sustainable growth is my goal. A few students shared with me that they really got inspired and learned something valuable to their work and career. With that, all my preparation and efforts are worth it. Will keep up to improve and empower more innovative leaders for our society.

Grateful to join the 2nd influential GBA forums in the same week. This one today was organized by Hong Kong Economic Journal HKEJ 信報. We had our HKSAR Government Chief Executive, John Lee, this time. He shared his GBA strategy for Hong Kong with us. I will be participating in a few more GBA forums in the next couple of weeks. Learn more every day. Stay tuned. Pleased to be a guest speaker in a panel today to talk about the impact of innovation and technology on the GBA growth for Hong Kong companies. Learned a lot from my fellow panel speakers like Dr. Rocky Cheng #HKCSPeter Mok #HKSTP and Ir. Dave Chan #ATAL. Appreciate 信報財經新聞總編輯 #郭艷明 #HKEJ Chief Editor Alice Kwok and her teammates to organize such a great forum for experience sharing. Also, thank 林伽遙 Caca Lam for moderating the panel. #GBA #GreaterBayArea

What a morning with old and new friends in the Peak after having lots of moon cakes last night. I went up early so I could enjoy my coffee and breakfast in the Pacific Coffee shop with the best bird’s eye view of Hong Kong. I took a picture with the new #peaktram as well. Met a beautiful cat to walk along with us. Yes, it was a #cat not a dog. What a lovely trip!

Really happy to see my mentor Dr. George Lam and many good friends again there. Thanks Fonia Wong 黃仰芳Alex Au and their #HKDAS teammates to organize this hiking gathering. We had veterans and #GenZ talents on #innovation and #technology, especially #DigitalAsset#MetaVerse#FinTech and #AI, joined the exercise today.

#HKDAS Hong Kong Digital Asset Society is a new organization to bring those who are interested in Digital Asset together to innovate and shape the future of this field in Hong Kong. So honoured to be engaged as one of their industry advisors to contribute and learn more about this emerging industry.

We had a live demonstration of Edutainment at the nice SAP collaborative office today. After a few sharing sessions on data literacy and data analytics, old friends and new friends were enjoying the famous and tasty German and Belgium beers, and great food.

First, we had some food of thoughts from Esmond Tong, the newly onboard MD of SAP. Congratulations to Esmond for his new journey at SAP.

I, as OpenCertHub Academy’s President, talked about the importance of data literacy democratization to traditional industry leaders and introduced our Data Literacy Empowerment Programme #DLEP. DLEP aims to empower enterprises to build a strong and sustainable data culture and empower the majority of their employees to think, speak and act on data. More can be found here www.ochacademy.com.

Greg Wong from SAP then talked about the augmented analysis. Clients and friends from SAP and OpenCertHub Academy attended the sharing sessions. The sharings were insightful but we saved the best for the last.

The beers, chit chats and joyness were all over SAP office to celebrate the mid autumn festival. What a gathering!

Thanks to Esmond TongAndrew LingGreg WongCannie TsangHelen LamSuki Chan and their SAP teammates to organize such a great #EduTainment for us. Should do more and will do… Not just beer but reconnecting with friends and clients.

In the turbulent time worldwide, we all really treasured and were grateful to have such a gathering. May you all have a pleasant, safe and warm mid-autumn festival holiday with your families and friends.

We may think that foodpanda’s office would be like a warehouse or a market as it deals with food delivery and logistics. In fact, foodpanda’s office is exactly like a vibrant startup’s office. The environment is open and collaborative. It is full of young talents with passion and innovation. Certainly, the cutty “Pau Pau” panda is there to make everyone joyful at work. They also have draft beer for informal gathering and praticing kitchen to co-create new cuisines with their partners, and more. Just love it.

Thanks for the leadership from their CEO Ryan Lai. It really made a huge difference to innovate for customers and engage young talents. Really happy to see that Ryan has brought his entrepreneurial experience to lead and change the company and in fact the industry. It reinforces my experience again that people who have been startups before can really bring entrepreneurship to corporates and make a difference.

I visited Ryan and his big data man Andrew Chan today in their nice office. We exchanged views on platform and data strategy. Thanks for Ryan’s and Andrew’s sharing and their special moon cake. Really proud of Ryan to lead foodpanda to become a leader in Hong Kong. Add oil, Ryan, Andrew and team.

Finally completed the “Data Monetization Strategy: Creating Value Through Data” program organized by MIT Sloan School of Management 美國麻省理工大學斯隆商學院. It was one of the best data strategy programs in the recent few years. Even I have solid experience and background on AI and Big Data, I found that this program provides very relevant practices to monetize our data asset.

Big thanks to Dr. Barb Wixom‘s sharing and effort to put together this insightful program for us. My classmates or learning partners were from all over the world but we have a common goal to find the best way to monetize data. We formed a cross-country, cross-company and cross-function community and had lots of forums in the program to exchange views on relevant topics. That was one of the best parts in the program.

The course was not that easy as we might think of. It took me a few months to go through a series of modules and assignments. However, it is worth spending effort on this course out of my already-packed schedule.

The program had quite strict requirement to grant the certification to the participants and really tested my knowledge and persistence. My drive is that we are not just learning a new technology. To stay relevant in today’s digitally-disruptive world, we got to have the mindset to keep learning and innovating. Grateful that I did it and was granted the certificate.

My key takeaway is that it takes more than data and technology to monetize data effectively. Democratizing data literacy to everyone at all business levels and empowering them with data mindset are critical for data monetization success. That is what my team and I at OpenCertHub Academy have been empowering quite a few enterprises in Asia to do so.

If you would like to know more about this MIT program, here is a good video for it https://lnkd.in/gVZcdnuq

Enjoy learning and innovating!

Grateful to have Dr. Victor Ng to co-deliver our joint AI for Financial Services course to ICBC (Asia) at CUHK today. Really appreciate the full-day presence of Miss Gao, the Chairman and Executive Director of ICBC(Asia) together with their senior management. That was an excellent Lead-by-Example for all leaders. If you would like to cultivate and change your colleagues, you demonstrate it first. Really appreciate it, Miss Gao.

Dr. Ng and I have designed a Data Literacy Empowerment Programme #DLEP to empower all levels of colleagues in organizations to speak data. Today, I shared about how AI applies to financial services with real cases and examples worldwide while Dr. Ng cultivated the participants on data culture and mindset through experiential exercises. We have been doing it for many enterprises especially banks. What a practical combination to illustrate how leading enterprise is making good use of data to win the hearts of their customers. To know more about DLEP, please visit OpenCertHub Academy www.ochacademy.com.

The most impressive and rewarding part for me and Dr. Ng was the sharing from our students about their findings and suggestions from their team exercises. After we have shared our experiences, our students not only digested the key points well, but also come up with solid suggestions to make changes in ICBC to empower their colleagues to be citizen data scientists and data citizens. More importantly, their own data mindset has changed and they appreciate even more to use data to solve problems. Thanks to all for your effort. Congratulations and welcome aboard to the DLEP journey.
