DLEP Programme @Bank of East Asia

My belief is that empowering people to do fishing is always better than serving them fish all the time. Our data and IT professionals have been doing a great job to help busness users to prepare reports and analytics so that the users can make better decisions, actions and even predictions. In the highly competitive envirnoment in the digital economy, doing this is simply not good enough to stay relevant.

That’s why we OpenCertHub Academy #OCHA www.ochacademy.com, a passionate and experienced team on data science and data culture, design our Data Literacy Empowerment Programme #DLEP to empower leaders and users at all levels across the whole organizations in major industries, such as financial services, property, transportation, utility, retail and so on, to speak the 2nd business language – Data. What it means is that everyone communicates, argues and wins with data as a habit in their daily conversation, meetings and tasks. We understand customers, seize opportunities and tackle problems through the smart use of data.

We aim to nurture and change the data culture of the organizations through training, data forums with industry experts and startups, cross-team data projects, community and more. Really grateful and thankful to see BEA to have a visionary leadership to go along with us in this journey of data culture transformation. We cultivated a group of Citizen Data Scientists (CDS) as the change agents to drive data culture change in their respective departments. We also have trained over hundreds of Data Citizens (DC) who now have the data mindset to use data more often in their daily jobs. The journey continues and more to come.

We thank for the trust from BEA senior management to us and have us as their trusted companion in the Data Literacy Empowerment journey. Really appreciate the collaboration and teamwork from BEA’s Data Team Kenny Au, FinTech & IT Team Stephen L. and Training & Development Team Doris Tong, and their bright teammates. Thank you! With their effort and support, we did build a very solid foundation and mutual trust to grow better and faster in 2023 and beyond. Look forward to sharing more experience with you all next year.

MIT Prgram Completion: “Data Monetization Strategy: Creating Value Through Data”

Finally completed the “Data Monetization Strategy: Creating Value Through Data” program organized by MIT Sloan School of Management 美國麻省理工大學斯隆商學院. It was one of the best data strategy programs in the recent few years. Even I have solid experience and background on AI and Big Data, I found that this program provides very relevant practices to monetize our data asset.

Big thanks to Dr. Barb Wixom‘s sharing and effort to put together this insightful program for us. My classmates or learning partners were from all over the world but we have a common goal to find the best way to monetize data. We formed a cross-country, cross-company and cross-function community and had lots of forums in the program to exchange views on relevant topics. That was one of the best parts in the program.

The course was not that easy as we might think of. It took me a few months to go through a series of modules and assignments. However, it is worth spending effort on this course out of my already-packed schedule.

The program had quite strict requirement to grant the certification to the participants and really tested my knowledge and persistence. My drive is that we are not just learning a new technology. To stay relevant in today’s digitally-disruptive world, we got to have the mindset to keep learning and innovating. Grateful that I did it and was granted the certificate.

My key takeaway is that it takes more than data and technology to monetize data effectively. Democratizing data literacy to everyone at all business levels and empowering them with data mindset are critical for data monetization success. That is what my team and I at OpenCertHub Academy have been empowering quite a few enterprises in Asia to do so.

Training: AI for Financial Services Course for ICBC (Asia)

Grateful to have Dr. Victor Ng to co-deliver our joint AI for Financial Services course to ICBC (Asia) at CUHK today. Really appreciate the full-day presence of Miss Gao, the Chairman and Executive Director of ICBC(Asia) together with their senior management. That was an excellent Lead-by-Example for all leaders. If you would like to cultivate and change your colleagues, you demonstrate it first. Really appreciate it, Miss Gao.

Dr. Ng and I have designed a Data Literacy Empowerment Programme #DLEP to empower all levels of colleagues in organizations to speak data. Today, I shared about how AI applies to financial services with real cases and examples worldwide while Dr. Ng cultivated the participants on data culture and mindset through experiential exercises. We have been doing it for many enterprises especially banks. What a practical combination to illustrate how leading enterprise is making good use of data to win the hearts of their customers. The most impressive and rewarding part for me and Dr. Ng was the sharing from our students about their findings and suggestions from their team exercises. More importantly, their own data mindset has changed and they appreciate even more to use data to solve problems. Thanks to all for your effort. Big thanks to our guest speakers Lorraine Cheung #Yahoo, Chris Wang #AWS, Kevin K T Lee #Redspots and Henry Chu #PillnPillow. Two of them are entrepreneurs and the other two are platform providers. That enabled us to discuss this topic from a more balanced perspective.

We discussed from MetaVerse opportunities, challenges to technologies, platforms, talents requirement and future skills. MetaVerse is not a hype but the direction is still being shaped. It is very early so everyone gets a chance but we need to keep learning and be open minded.

In essence, there are a few things that we need to strike a balance in order to make the best out of this unprecdented opportunity for the decade – MetaVerse.

1. The next 5 to 10 years will have lots of opportunities. By 2030, the market is going to reach 5 trillion USD globally. At same time, lots of regulations and governance needed to be in place to balance the opportunities and potential problems.

2. We have more opportunities from scalability to the global markets but at the same time competitions from global players.

3. New digital skills will be required but soft skills, like problem solving, communication, project management are equally important.

4. #Data analytics, #MachineLearning and #AI are crucial now and even more pivotal in the MetaVerse for customer experience and engagement.

5. SMEs are lack of resources and talents but lots of good partners in the MetaVerse ecosystem that they can leverage on.

6. Keep trying and learning to get started but be aware of the risks like losing Crypto from your hot wallets.

Today is a bright day with a sunny and clear sky. What a great day to kick off our collaborative partnership with The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers! OpenCertHub Academy (#OCHA) and The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (#HKIB) are joining hands to upskill the data literacy of the executives and practitioners in the #Banking industry.

#Data is one of the most important assets for leading enterprises in today’s #DigitalEconomy. For #FinancialServices, data is the “new gold” or one of the most important assets these days. To unleash the power of data in the banking industry, everyone needs to speak data and treat it as their second business language.

Just having a core team of data scientists is not good enough to fully unleash the business values of data for banks. We are seeing that a few major international and local #banks are empowering the majority of their workforce on data literacy. They aim to embed a data mindset and skills with every possible colleague so that they can make use of data in their daily jobs. They also empower colleagues to communicate effectively and regularly with their data and IT teammates to come up with better and better analytics and data sources.

The prime objective of the “Data Literacy Empowerment Programme”, the flagship programme of OpenCertHub Academy (OCHA), is to democratize data literacy to everyone in a company so that they can seize the opportunities from data monetization and solve business problems with data analytics on daily basis.

The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (HKIB) is one of the major institutes to provide training and certification services to the banking community in Hong Kong. Together, OCHA and HKIB aim to contribute to the growth of data talents in the banking community and enhance the competitiveness of the banking industry in Hong Kong through the pervasive use of data. Appreciate the leadership and trust from HKIB’s Carrie Leung and Philip Kam, and the great support from their teammates, and certainly my OCHA’s teammates Andy Kwok, Dr. Victor Ng, Patrick Tsoi, Candi Yeung and more. (Hong Kong) The Road Ahead in the Year of Tiger

The Road Ahead.. Today is the fourth day of the Year of the Tiger. It is the official work day of the year according to the #TongSheng #通勝. It is believed that if we started our work well today, we will have a prosperous and harvesting year. Wish you start your first working day well and have a great Year of the Tiger. 祝大家開工大吉，身體健康。

Rather than a busy work day, I started my first working day today in a mountain to plan my “road” in the Year of the Tiger. It is a clear sky, quiet and comfortable temperature today. It is a perfect day to think clearly on what to improve myself from last year and to achieve this year. How about you?

The more that I think of my journey, the better that I feel grateful to what I have today. Thanks to my family, my beloved ones, friends and schoolmates, mentors and mentees, professors and students, colleagues and business partners and many others in my journey. I am just lucky and fortunate to have met you.

Look forward to having another year of joy and accomplishment with you all.

Remarks: #TongSheng is a traditional Chinese calendar which marks what to do and what not to do every day. It is a great example of the first generation of Big Data which predicted what to do based on the past historical data. No machine learning and AI were there then but lots of wisdom from our ancestors.

Grateful that Hang Seng Bank, one of the major banks in Hong Kong, is determined to become a data-driven leader in the financial services. Appreciate the vision and leadership from the bank’s senior management to make this happen. It really sets a great example for Hong Kong companies to treat data as their strategic asset and how data play a game changer role in the Digital Economy.

Apart from data and technology parts, Data Literacy is equally critical for the success of a data-driven enterprise. Apart from English and Chinese, do you speak #Data? According to Gartner, Data is the second business language in the Digital Economy. Every employee, not just data team and IT team, needs to speak data to communicate with, argue with and persuade customers, colleagues, bosses, investors, partners, literally everyone around you. This is one of the top Future Skills ranked by almost all leading research firms.

It is my pleasure and honour having this opportunity to lead and deliver our Data Literacy Empowerment Programme #DLEP to the bank. DLEP aims to democratise data literacy to the majority of the workforce through a series of data literacy executive roundtables, experiential workshops, group projects, mentoring sessions, hackathons and more for the bank. It emphasizes on data mindset and culture, data storytelling, machine learning applications and hands-on experience. Thanks to the trust and support from Hang Seng Bank’s senior management especially the leadership from Patrick Khong, CDO of HASE, my CUHK’s teammates and OpenCertHub Academy’s data experts.

Higher customer expectations on digital experience and keen competition from data savvy banks and FinTech startups are some of key drivers for us to create this DLEP programme. In fact, it happened in not just financial services but also most of the major traditional industries.

(Hong Kong) “Power Duo of AI and Big Data” Training for ICBC Asia

I was impressed by #ICBC Asia in the way how their senior management took #AI, #BigData and #FinTech seriously. Usually, most of the senior leaders will only stay for 30 minutes of a training class and will excuse themselves from it. This time was very different.
All their top and senior management, including Chairman and Executive Director, actively participated in my AI and Big Data class. Guess what? They stayed till the very end of my class and actively participated in the whole day.

Really appreciate their leadership to demonstrate and lead by example. Their top management believe that continuous learning is the way to stay relevant and competitive in their financial services industry. By doing it themselves, it brings culture change to their colleagues.

My class today was on the Power Duo of AI and Big Data. It is a part of the Digital Leadership Series that I designed and led for the Asia Pacific Institute of Business #APIB of the #CUHK Business School.

I started my class today with a clear message to the ICBC team that they need to speak one more language on the top of Chinese and English in the digital economy. That is #Data. In order to be a #AIFirst and #DataDriven bank, everyone in the company has to have basic to advanced #DataLiteracy. Reskilling them on data is not an option but a necessity.

We then explained the AI and #MachineLearning technologies, business models and data monetization concepts to them. We also explored new AI applications in #FinancialServices and #DataGovernance with them. “Seeing Is Believing It”. I invited Patrick Tsoi, a veteran in #DataScience to use real data to demonstrate the power of Big Data in financial services. Thank you Patrick, ICBC team and CUHK team.

It is just a good start for the #DigitalTransformation for ICBC Asia. It is a journey and we are happy to contribute along with the team.
