Finally, we could physically join the Google Cloud Summit Hong Kong after the 3 years long pandemic. Over thousand of guests attended the event today. The vibrant and engaging atmosphere was very impressive and full of passion. Thanks the great leadership from Kathy Lee and Disaree (DiDi) Wong to make this happen again in Hong Kong.

Today, we have witnessed many new offerings from Google. Needless to say, it was all about AI. Google really makes AI easier for every one from IT to business users. Impressive demos from June Yang on their innovation and applications on Generative AI. It was eye opener for me. Google and several renowed speakers also talked about democratizing data analytics and AI to users at all levels. Data culture again comes to the top of the list.

I delivered a talk in today’s summit on our experience how we collaborated with Google to empower business users in private and public sectors to make use of data every day as their habits through our Data Literacy Empowerment Programme #DLEP. Thanks for Owen Chong Michael Yung and Ricky Lau from Google for their support. More can be found here https://ochacademy.com/.

One after one offline huge conferences have been coming back to Hong Kong. Pumped into friends whom we have not met for years in these occasions. Really felt warm and happy especially seeing old friends Dave ChenSuk-Wah KwokAlex ZhangKenny AuLeo Tsang, CPA, LLM, MSc. Charles HungChris ShumEric OrCharleston SinFuller YuPascal TseAllan WongJusty YuenDerry FongAdela Lau and many others.

Also, it is always joyful to see our founding fellows of DaLa – Data Literacy Association #DaLa in any occasions. Today we had Ravel Lai Herman Cheng Stephen L. Andy Kwok Victor Ng Dr. Lana Lo Matthew Chan Jacob Wai, FRM, FFA FIPA, FCMA, CSDP, MHKCS, LLM, MBA Michael Yung, joined the Summit on different capacities.

Change Starts With “YOU”. What a quote posted on the wall of the Agile Culture Transformation #ACT room in the China CITIC Bank International #CNCBI 中信銀行(國際) in Hong Kong. The Bank really understands how important culture is to make any change work. It is so inspiring and a perfect place for us to hold our forum there with the main theme on Data Literacy: From Data Insight to Data Monetization.

The secret sauce of monetizing data asset effectively is in fact Data Culture of the organization. Our audiences were from different business units of the Bank. They also agreed with us that data culture is the top challenge to monetize data asset of the bank.

Frazer Lam, CIO of CNCBI, and I have delivered our speeches to set the scene. We then had a fruitful discussion with Patrick Khong #HKEXMichael Yung #Google and Victor Ng #OpenCertHubAcademy #OCHA. Really grateful having them in my panel. We all learnt a lot from their sharing. Thank you.

My 3 key takeaways on monetizing data effectively are as follows:

1. Collaboration across business units, IT and Data teams are super important to capitalize data asset.

2. Users at all levels should speak the language of data as their habit to solve problems, seize opportunities and communicate/agrue with stakeholders.

3. Building a sustainable data culture is the most critical success factor for data monetization rather than talent, data, technology, financial support and business cases.

Victor Ng and I have been empowering quite a few enterprises with our Data Literacy Empowerment Programme #DLEP. It is a data culture change programme and is a journey instead of a project. Please find out more https://ochacademy.com/

Really appreciate Denny Woo, CPFinT(M)Salina C.Sunny SoJoel Tse and many others from CNCBI and my OpenCertHub Academy’s colleagues to make this happen. Thanks for all participants on site and online today and their sensible questions. Happy to catch up with good friends Benedict Lau, CSM, CSPOLam HollyHongming Hu,CFA FRM and a few more now with the Bank there after the long Covid time.

Change Starts With “YOU”. Let’s empower ourselves to be a data citizen and speak the language of data every day.

Grateful to have a fruitful discussion with 3 elite digital leaders in Hong Kong and share our experience with a group of senior executives of MTR. Thank you to my panel guests:

Our main theme was Digital Strategy: Lead and Execute Your Digital Vision. It was really inspiring to many participants including myself indeed.

My 3 key takeaways are:

1. Digital Strategy should be seen as Strategy in Digital Era; Digital Transformation should be thought as Transformation in Digital Era; and certainly Digital Leader should transform themselves into Leaders in Digital Era. If we have no Strategy and cannot get transformation working, there is no place for Digital and certainly no place for Digital Leaders.

2. Cascading Strategy down is one of the major challenges for any companies. Just townhall communication is far from enough. Treat every employee differently just like how we are doing for customers. What does our Strategy mean to every single one of employees? Rather than just “Segment of One” for customer (customer centric or customer obsessed), can we do “Workforce of One” (employee centric or employee obsessed)?

3. Innovation will just become a threatre and showroom if we don’t understand the first 2 points. Even you got a fancy innovation head title, it doesn’t mean you can overcome all challenges in Transformation including Digital Transformation. Eventually you lose your passion and leave your company voluntarily or involuntarily.

Amazing f2f panel discussion today with 5 elite digital leaders. Thanks for Ian Chan #OctopusAdrian Toy #GoogleKevin Huang #CarousellRalph Szeto #AIM & Frankie Ng #Shopify.

We discussed 2 key questions.

1. What are the hurdles of #DigitalTransformation?

2. What are the impacts of the pandemic on Digital Transformation?

My key takeaways are:

1. Sense of urgency is critical to drive change including digital tranformation.

2. Great potential of our #Entrepreneurship were unleashed when people have more time with themselves during the pandemic.

3. Culture is key as political and functional silos causing lots of hurdles without alignment.

4. The pandemic drives not only digital adoption of users but also #CustomerExperience #innovation from the providers.

5. Some great visions of the panelist: Carousell wants to make 2nd hand products as people’s first choice. It brings #Sustainability & #SocialImpact to the society while Shopify aims to be the platform of all commerce at all touchpoints instead of just #Ecommerce.

Really happy to see Roy Hung & his friends again. I met Roy a few years ago in our #Cyberport #CUPP 2016 programme. My team & I brought 50+ top university students from Hong Kong to the #StanfordUniversity in #SiliconValley to learn #FinTech & #Entrepreneurship. It was a fruitful, impactful & fun trip. Apart from what we learned from this trip, Roy & I also talked about the tasty & yummy lobsters and crabs in the Fisherman’s Wharf as well as the Ferrari from Leslie Yuen. What an experience and memory!. Thanks Leslie YuenDr. Edwin Lee 李根興Alice So and Katherine Lam for their great effort to make this happened.

Let me give you an eyesight test. Can you find out where Roy and I were in the group photo in front of #Google#INTEL and #PlugAndPlay Headquarters in the #BayArea #California?

Really grateful to see & feel that Roy still has the heart to innovate and be a tech entrepreneur👍 together with his friends. We were discussing another potential and exciting venture last night. Keep it going and add oil💪✊. You have my full support🤝🙌.

Those effort that we put to cultivate next generation of startup entrepreneurs was well spent. Great stuff. 培養香港年青一代成為創業家。年青人及導師都要加油!努力!

To support them further, I have given them a copy of my book #數碼力大提升 with my encouraging message.

Most of us have been using and engaging with these companies like Alibaba, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Netflix, Tencent, and Ctrip. What do they have in common? They are not only the world’s highest valuated businesses but also the world’s most influential platforms. The next generation of Fortune500 companies in the decade of 2020 will be mostly platform-based businesses such as Airbnb, Grab, Robinhood, Spotify, and more.

What is platform? More importantly, what kind of magic do they have to make them so powerful? Platforms, a near-monopolistic business model, are quietly taking over the global economy. These platforms make much of their money not by what they sell but by facilitating the interactions or transactions of others. Traditional product, manufacturers,  brands, and intermediaries (or “the middleman”) incumbents in all major industries are being seriously disrupted by these platforms.

I am going to explore why every one of the businesses has to have the right platform strategy in order to able to compete and even survive in the DigitalEconomy, and how we can formulate a suitable and feasible platform strategy for our businesses even we are a product company now. Stay tuned on April 29.
