(Hong Kong) Digital Leadership Empowerment programme for China Everbright Bank HK

Would like to share with you my 3 “brights” today. We all enjoyed a “bright” weather today to kickoff our Digital Leadership Empowerment programme for a group of “bright” talents of China “Everbright” Bank Hong Kong.

The key objective of the programme is to empower China Everbright Bank HK with innovative, data driven, intrapreneurial and agile mindset and capabilities to seize the emerging opportunities and manage the unprecedented challenges in the #DigitalEconomy.

A big thank to Fanny Chan and her teammates to make this happen. I enjoy collaborating with her team. They are not just bright but also positive, passionate and joyful. Also appreciate the great support from #HKIB Carrie Leung and #OpenCertHub Andy Kwok and their teammates.

It is just the start of a fruitful and impactful journey of #upskilling #CEBHK. I am so grateful that we can be a companion with this group of bright minds in the road ahead.

(Hong Kong) The East Meets The West

The East Meets The West. Our #CUHKEMBA fellow students really experienced it in the last few weekends. Morning on digital and afternoon on Chinese wisdom.

I taught about corporate innovation and digital strategy. Most of today’s digital innovation and strategy wisdom and experience were rooted mainly from the US. Professor Sin #冼日明 taught about traditional Chinese wisdom #易經 that was originated from China. That’s the best of Hong Kong where we can make use of the best wisdom of both worlds. We have been doing our best to bring out the synergistic power of the East and the West.

Thanks for Professor Andrew Chan and Pong Yuen, Howard Lam of #CUHK #CUHKEMBA CUHK Business School CUHK EMBA to make these happened from the very beginning till now.

(Hong Kong) An Engaging CUHK EMBA Course on Corporate Innovation

Just completed teaching a highly engaging #CUHK #EMBA course on corporate innovation in the last few weekends. The main theme was #CorporateInnovation, #Intrapreneurship, #DigitalTransformation and #EmergingTechnology. My students are all elite leaders and executives from Hong Kong, Macau, Mainland China and overseas across various industries.

Really felt great as our fellow students really contributed to our collective learning. Also felt exhausted as all of us gave in a lot of effort to learn. Really appreciate the growth mindset and learning attitude of our students.

We had gone through a few key best practices and discussed a few real good case studies. This was a special milestone for me as well because I used my own freshly published case study (Nov 9, 2021) on #HSBC #OpenInnovation as one of the key cases to teach this class. Thanks for Daniel Chan Jaff Lau Ada L. Danielle T. and many others in HSBC and Ivey’s professor Hubert Pun to make this case possible. The case is now globally accessible by all major business schools through the world’s top case publisher #IveyPublishing. Here is the link if you would like to learn from it.

I also invited great innovative leaders from corporate and startup worlds to share their experience with my students. Really thank Austin R. Bryan, from #CLP , Kenny Sham from #LEGO and Harris SUN from #RaSpect. After all these, my students had a final project presentation to share their findings and recommendations to the company that they have chosen.

Great insights from my students. I am happy to see that my students came up with great insights and recommendations. I am also grateful that my experience sharings have empowered my students to manage innovation more effectively for their companies and ventures.

What is so special about this photo? It reminds us how grateful and lucky we are in Hong Kong. Let’s have a check. Can you tell how well the #bus is equipped by looking at this photo?

1. The TV Panel shows the journey real time so we know where we are and heading to.

2. The USB plug for recharging our mobile devices.

3. The window curtain for shielding out the strong sunlight.

4. The Webcam to monitor seat capacity, track people traffic for capacity and route planning, as well as unexpected accident and incidents.

5. The improved comfortable seats, air conditioning controller per seat, clearer speakers for broadcasting stops by human voice in advance, etc.

6. The seat belt for every passenger and the chair handle to keep us from falling out due to stop or falling asleep.

Behind the scene, more like how good the engine runs, how good is our highway, pay bus fare by any popular eWallets, professional and responsible drivers.. Wow.. we have a lot but we just don’t know or take it for granted.

Grateful to spend my weekend with elite tech entrepreneurs and business leaders to learn about emerging technologies and business innovation. It is one of my classes in #CUHK Mini MBA Innovative Leadership program. It aims to #upskilling busy executives and #entrepreneurs on the latest #leadership mindset and skills in the #DigitalEconomy through a series of short modules in a few months.

I particularly like the mix of my class participants. We had quite a few startups’ founders and leaders like #Dayta, tech giants like #AWS, financial services like #HangSengBank, public sector like #HKHousingSociety and major ecosystem enabler like #HKSTP. My class in fact is a mini tech and innovation #ecosystem. One of the most valuable parts of this class was the team discussion and case studies where we could focus on the key aspects that our participants were most concerned and cared about in seizing the opportunities and managing the potential risks in the emerging digital economy.

Thanks for the active participation of all the students. Really enjoyed it and learnt from you all as well.

(HKFTW2021) Second day of Hong Kong Fin Tech Week

Building Billion Dollar Ecosystems was the key theme of my panel discussion with the top leaders from #HSBC on the 2nd day of #HongKongFinTechWeek 2021.

I had a team of experienced banking leaders in my panel. Together they are a great representation of not just HSBC but also the incumbent banks. Really thank and appreciate their contributions and sharings:
1. Christina Ong, Head of Business Banking, Hong Kong, HSBC
2. Yvonne Yiu, Managing Director, Head of Global Liquidity & Cash Management, Hong Kong, HSBC
3. Dharini Kannan Hemant, Head of PayMe, HSBC
4. Sami Abouzahr, Head of Customer Wealth, Hong Kong, HSBC

We had a full house today. If you have missed it, here are my key takeaways.
1. Align external and internal stakeholders of the ecosystem, such as #FinTech #startups, #regulators, internal colleagues like #compliance and #procurement, to focus on customers. Do we know their pain points? Can we solve them effectively and fast enough? Can we collaborate with the ecosystem to achieve these?

2. Culture and practice do impact the effectiveness of the ecosystem collaboration. #Payme was a very important milestone for HSBC not just business but also internal buy-in on how innovation and agile worked. The passion of the Payme team really made a difference to influence the culture of the bank.

3. How we can go beyond banking and empower our customers from their end to end journey and help them see the mutual benefits are very important.

Elephant can dance and change. We can see major banks like HSBC are very determined to make changes to transform themselves into an innovative and digital bank instead of being perceived as a traditional bank. The end game is still who can effectively identify and solve their customers’ pain points fast enough. Value co-creation with the ecosystem is the only way.

The Awards is an annual competition organized by #HarvardBusinessReview, #HBR, #TsinghuaUniversity and #SAP. Hong Kong started participating this competition first time in 2021.

(HKFTW2021) First Day Panel Discussion in Hong Kong FinTech Week 2021

Glad to have a fruitful discussion with elite #FinTech leaders on the theme of #FinancialInclusion on the 1st day of the 2021 Hong Kong FinTech Week #HKFTW #HKFinTechWeek. We had Tat Lee #WeLabBank, Venetia Lee #Alipay, David Rosa #Neat and myself in our panel moderated by Karen Man #BakerMckenzie.

My 3 key takeaways from our panel are:

1. Large FSIs and FinTechs need to be customer centric on empowering the #SMEs and under privileges to make use of finance to change their lives. It is not just a business model to make money but also a very meaningful PURPOSE. That aligns all key stakeholders to collaborate.

2. #Data is key for the success of financial inclusion. #FSI is a regulated industry. Banks need to use #DataScience to seize opportunities and manage the risk of financial inclusion while SMEs can make use of data to identify areas to improve their credit scores.

3. The success of Financial Inclusion needs #DataLiteracy democratization. Data is our customer voice in particular we need to deal with massive number of customers in the financial inclusion market. Every one in FSI needs to be reskilled or upskilled to be a #CitizenDataScientist. Major financial services incumbents are proactively working towards this direction.
