I am grateful to have Anna Lin #GS1HK as my guest in another episode of the #ToaSirDataTalk #ToaSir講數 series. Anna has been with #GS1 for 30 years and brought standards and rich experience to the #SupplyChain and #Retail industries in Hong Kong and the region.

We talked about how these industries have been making use of #data in the past 3 decades and the future decade. GS1 plays a vital role in #GlobalTrade#eCommerce and #O2O business. 6 billion GS1 #Barcodes scanned global daily. Data captured in these processes are very useful and powerful.

Anna pointed out that, from the beginning till now, #Digitization was important so everything could be easily managed and tracked in an effective and efficient ways. With processes and standards in place by using technologies like #RFID#IOT, the next important key step is #DataIntelligence. That is how to make good use of the captured data in our digitization phases to enhance our business, create values for customers and generate innovative business models.

What’s next? #SmartKiosk#AIOT#2DBarCode and more will further integrate data from supply chain and retail. Data analytics are the key. GS1 HK and #OpenCertHub shared the same vision. GS1 believes that a standardized barcode and further generation of the standard is the global language of business while OpenCertHub believes that data is the next business language apart from English and your local language.

Both organizations joined hands to launch a series of #BigData certification training to all levels of employees to strengthen their #DataLiteracy so that they unlock the value and power of the data generated in the supply chain and retail. We aim to #reskill and #upskill today’s leaders and workforce with the ability to analyze, communicate and argue with, storytelling about data, and most importantly making decision and taking actions based on data.

Thanks both #GS1HK and #OCH teams. Stay tuned on how to access my “Toa Sir Data talk” with Anna and other episodes in the series.

“The Golden 10 Years of Hong Kong #Startups” or “香港初創黃金十年” – That was the main theme of my interview with Hong Kong #ITPro IT PRO, Giant Media 炬傳媒 – a leading IT magazine for #digital and #corporate leaders in Hong Kong. The whole article was published on the latest volume vol 173. https://lnkd.in/g-wj3FDp

I was so grateful to study #ComputerScience and start my career 30 years ago in #SiliconValley in the US.  Then, lots of ups and downs throughout my career. In the interview, I shared my career experience from the US to Asia and from the corporate world to recently startups.

The 1st “5 Golden Years of Hong Kong Startups”:
I have been heavily engaging in the startups ecosystem since I joined Cyberport as the 1st Chief Public Mission Officer. My mission in Cyberport was to cultivate not just over 1,000 startups but also an ecosystem to connect all key stakeholders so new and existing startups can leverage on it to grow.

Glad to see that we have established a vibrant international #ecosystem for our start-ups to grow and for our corporates to co-innovate with in the last 5 years. With the joint effort from the key stakeholders in our ecosystem like #Entrepreneurs#Investors#CorporateLeaders#Incubators#Professors#Regulators#PolicyMakers#Professionals, and more, we not only have created 10+ #Unicorns for Hong Kong but also have empowered quite a few influential #B2B collaborations.

The 2nd “Golden 5 Years of Hong Kong Startups”:
With the establishment of a competitive startup ecosystem in Hong Kong, we need to leverage and capitalize on this foundation in the next 5 years to grow Hong Kong to be the leading #innovation and #technology hub in the world. We do have 2 big markets, #GBA and #ASEAN, just next door. Let’s join hands to seize these unprecedented opportunities.

As a professor, an entrepreneur, an investor, and advisors to both startups and corporates, I am continuing my effort to contribute, empower and engage with this ecosystem, and further extend it to GBA and ASEAN in coming 5 golden years for HK startups. To find out more, please read my sharing in this issue of ITPRO. Let me know if you cannot access a copy of it.

Special thanks to ITPRO teammates to interview me and put together this edition. I have been lucky having a supportive family and met many great mentors, partners and friends in my career. Appreciate all of you who have helped me grow in my journey.

Really grateful to have an opportunity to discuss with GBA and digitalization experts in Hong Kong as well as mainland China. Thanks for #SAP #HKET #HKPC #GBABusinessSchool jointly organized it.

In particular, I was really pleased that we had my mentoring professor Andrew Chan, the President of the #GBA Business School, to share his views on the development of the GBA region.

Then, we had a panel on #DigitalTransformation in the context of the GBA with 2 of my friends. I firstly talked about the key success factors of digital transformation where customer centricity was the key. Andrew Ling from #SAP shared his experience to manage supply chain under uncertainty. Edmond Lai from #HKPC went through a few examples how #SMEs in Hong Kong to leverage on technologies to seize opportunities and manage challenges in these few years including the pandemic time.

Two leading enterprises from the mainland, #Bosch (China) Investment Ltd. and #Terminexus (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. also shared their digital transformation experience. They were the winners of the Digital Transformation Awards #鼎革獎
https://lnkd.in/gCudiqHx
The award aims to encourage companies in the mainland and Hong Kong to learn from each other on their digital transformation journey.

If you would like to learn from our fruitful discussion, here is the chance. Register this webinar:

Thanks for Sandy Yu Helen Lam Amy Mak and many teammates for their great effort behind the scene.

“Make Something WOW” was the message on the wall behind Michael Yung and I. That was close to what we have talked about. How to make our customers #WOW by smart use of #data?

This was another episode of the #ToaSirDataTalk #ToaSir講數 series organized by #OpenCertHub #OCH. Michael is an veteran in the #TravelTech and #CustomerLoyalty industry. We discussed how to leverage on data in the #B2C and #B2B markets.

Michael has been using data to empower his company to understand their consumers and offer the most suitable products and services to them. Another key customer of this industry is merchants. Michael also makes use of data to help his merchants to design right products and campaigns to their customers. We also talked about the key roles of data in a #platform.

We have discussed how data are being used in the Travel and Customer Loyalty industry. Michael is also an expert in data security. He also shared how to do a proper data governance to protect their customers and his company. We also touched on the challenges and opportunities on cross-border data sharing and #cloud strategies on #BigData and #AI applications. Thank you Michael.

Stay tuned for #ToaSirDataTalk #ToaSir講數. Will share the way to access this series of mine shortly. You don’t want to miss the experience sharing from Michael and other corporate and digital leaders from key industries in #HongKong, Mainland #China Iin particular #GBA and #ASEAN.

Prior episodes of the series:
Susanna Chiu, ED, #Bonjour
https://lnkd.in/gHC9HwcD

The best way to learn how to seize the opportunities of #BigData and #AI is not just reading books or taking training. Rather, we should learn from the industry leaders and practitioners. #OpenCertHub and I have started a series of experience sharing sessions called “Toa Sir Data Talk” or “Toa Sir講數”.

I will talk to the leaders from major industries in Hong Kong, Mainland and Asia on their journey of #DigitalTransformation. In particular, we will explore how #data empowers digital transformation.

Today, I have talked to Susanna Chiu, ED of #Bonjour #卓悦控股, one of the #NewRetail pioneers in Hong Kong and mainland. Susanna has been an innovator throughout her career from IT Audit, Digital TV to Supply Chain and New Retail. She is always a believer of digital innovation.

We discussed how we can make use of data on #Ecommerce #O2O #KOL #Platform #Ecosystem and more. Seeing Is Believing it. Susanna also walked me through their facilities with lots of new initiatives and fun. We both believe that empowering partners, customers and merchants with the power of data analytics is the key to the success of today’s business in the #DigitalEconomy.

Many thanks to Susanna and her teammates in Bonjour. We will continue talking to influential leaders on Data. Stay tuned for #ToaSirDataTalk and #ToaSir講數 on how you can access to this series of experience sharing.

Really my honour to receive a copy of Professor Andrew Chan latest book from him in person on his well-known “Left-Right Circle” or #LRC #左右圈。Find out more about Professor Chan’s book here.

I was in fact inspired by Professor Chan to write my book #數碼力大提升。 I also talked about the LRC in the context of #DigitalTransformation in my book. What a journey!

Appreciate all your support to my book. The 1st print of my book was sold out. The 2nd print is being reprinted by the publisher #天窗出版社

The school is another meaningful and impactful chapter for Professor Chan. Wish Professor all the best in his new journey.

It was one of the best forums on #AI and #BigData that I have hosted in the recent years where speakers and participants were highly engaged. Thanks for Shanghai Commercial Bank to invite my team #OpenCertHub to co-organize this forum.

#ShanghaiCommercialBank is one of the major banks in Hong Kong. They are passionate about #DigitalTransformation in particular how to become a AI-first data-driven bank.

I have invited top Hong Kong locally-grown AI #startups, multinational consulting firm and Chinese tech-savvy financial group to share with Shanghai Commercial Bank how they have empowered mid-sized banks in Hong Kong, Mainland China and other major economies in Asia. We have talked through AI technologies, application, adoption, challenges, culture, #ecosystem#data#reskilling#upskilling and more.

More importantly, CEO Mr. David Kwok and Board Member Mr. Sunny Cheung fully supported and engaged with us. They asked sensible questions and encouraged their senior management, middle management and young colleagues to proactively participate and have the courage to innovate. More than 250 staff have joined the forum on site and online as well. We also exchanged ideas through networking sessions.

Really appreciate the trust and support from Mr. Kwok, Mr. Cheung and their senior management. Special thanks to Ken Shih #AqumonCalvin Cheng, CFA #WizpressoMiles Wen (温豪夫) #FanolabsPatrick C.S. Fan #beNoveltyDaniel Ling #OneConnect, and Dick Fong. Also thanks my OpenCertHub teammate Andy Kwok and our team for their effort behind the scene.

Hope mid-sized banks in Asia can ride on AI to stay competitive and relevant in the #DigitalEconomy.

The growth in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) drives a strong supply and demand in various industries including manufacturing, construction, trading, retail, and certainly innovation and technology. Governments of ASEAN countries have been proactively encouraging foreign investment, developing infrastructure and digital transformation,  and promoting ASEAN to become a key destination for foreign direct investment.

  • Sustainable urbanisation is a key part of this demographic growth. It is estimated that nearly 70% of ASEAN’s population will live in urban areas by 2050

(Source: US-ASEAN Business Council)

I was impressed by #ICBC Asia in the way how their senior management took #AI#BigData and #FinTech seriously. Usually, most of the senior leaders will only stay for 30 minutes of a training class and will excuse themselves from it. This time was very different.
All their top and senior management, including Chairman and Executive Director, actively participated in my AI and Big Data class. Guess what? They stayed till the very end of my class and actively participated in the whole day.

Really appreciate their leadership to demonstrate and lead by example. Their top management believe that continuous learning is the way to stay relevant and competitive in their financial services industry. By doing it themselves, it brings culture change to their colleagues.

My class today was on the Power Duo of AI and Big Data. It is a part of the Digital Leadership Series that I designed and led for the Asia Pacific Institute of Business #APIB of the #CUHK Business School.

I started my class today with a clear message to the ICBC team that they need to speak one more language on the top of Chinese and English in the digital economy. That is #Data. In order to be a #AIFirst and #DataDriven bank, everyone in the company has to have basic to advanced #DataLiteracy. Reskilling them on data is not an option but a necessity.

We then explained the AI and #MachineLearning technologies, business models and data monetization concepts to them. We also explored new AI applications in #FinancialServices and #DataGovernance with them. “Seeing Is Believing It”. I invited Patrick Tsoi, a veteran in #DataScience to use real data to demonstrate the power of Big Data in financial services. Thank you Patrick, ICBC team and CUHK team.

It is just a good start for the #DigitalTransformation for ICBC Asia. It is a journey and we are happy to contribute along with the team.
