DLEP Programme: Forum Exploring AI Investment

Another bright day today. Apart from the sunny sky today, we did have a fruitful forum with the bright minds from the AI industry and bright talents from the China Everbright Bank Hong Kong Branch #CEBHK. It is a part of our Data Literacy Empowerment Programme #DLEP for CEBHK organized by OpenCertHub Academy #OCHA and Hong Kong Institute of Bankers #HKIB.

Appreciate the valuable insights and experience sharing from our guest speakers. It includes Ken Shih #Saxo #SaxoMarkets, Calvin Cheng, CFA #Wizpresso, Daniel Ling #OneConnect, and Edwin Hui #Capco. CEBHK’s C-suite together with their colleagues have actively participated our panel in their beautiful collaborative space. Thank you so much for the full support from Nancy Wu, Fanny Chan, their CEBHK’s C-suite and teammates. Also grateful to have my teammates from OpenCertHub and OpenCertHub Academy for their great effort behind the scene to make this forum an impactful one.

We went through a number of practical use cases, shared some key challenges, explored how to justify investment on AI in financial services. More importantly, how to nurture a data mindset and culture across the banks. It means from top management to all levels of colleagues have to be engaged and use data everyday.

In fact, MIT Slogan has a new article just published in May 2022. The core message is that Data is a team sport and the entire organization is the team. This requires data democratization, the idea that data should be in the hands of every employee.

We aim to empower employees of an organization at all levels with data literacy. Through the collaboration between the data-literate colleagues from different business units and data experts, their organizations will be able to stay ahead of their competition by unblocking more values from data.

I was impressed by the way Nancy Wu, the Deputy CEO of CEBHK, engaged with us and her colleagues today. Here is how she summarized what she learned today from the forum. Her 3 key takeaways today are.

Today is a bright day with a sunny and clear sky. What a great day to kick off our collaborative partnership with The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers! OpenCertHub Academy (#OCHA) and The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (#HKIB) are joining hands to upskill the data literacy of the executives and practitioners in the #Banking industry.

#Data is one of the most important assets for leading enterprises in today’s #DigitalEconomy. For #FinancialServices, data is the “new gold” or one of the most important assets these days. To unleash the power of data in the banking industry, everyone needs to speak data and treat it as their second business language.

Just having a core team of data scientists is not good enough to fully unleash the business values of data for banks. We are seeing that a few major international and local #banks are empowering the majority of their workforce on data literacy. They aim to embed a data mindset and skills with every possible colleague so that they can make use of data in their daily jobs. They also empower colleagues to communicate effectively and regularly with their data and IT teammates to come up with better and better analytics and data sources.

The prime objective of the “Data Literacy Empowerment Programme”, the flagship programme of OpenCertHub Academy (OCHA), is to democratize data literacy to everyone in a company so that they can seize the opportunities from data monetization and solve business problems with data analytics on daily basis.

The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (HKIB) is one of the major institutes to provide training and certification services to the banking community in Hong Kong. Together, OCHA and HKIB aim to contribute to the growth of data talents in the banking community and enhance the competitiveness of the banking industry in Hong Kong through the pervasive use of data. Appreciate the leadership and trust from HKIB’s Carrie Leung and Philip Kam, and the great support from their teammates, and certainly my OCHA’s teammates Andy Kwok, Dr. Victor Ng, Patrick Tsoi, Candi Yeung and more. It was the first time for me to teach under the typhoon signal #3 in my life. Really appreciate all of our executive students’ heart to learn and join our class on <Leadership and Workforce Transformation in the Digital Era> yesterday. It is a part of the #CUHK #APIB <Digital Leadership Series for Executives> programme that I introduced and designed. https://lnkd.in/gU8AzDJ

We had leaders and executives from various industries such as #FinancialServices, #Retail, #Energy, #Pharmaceutical, #Technologies, etc. to join the class yesterday. It indicated that leaders from these industries are keen on learning more about the soft side of digital transformation.

Appreciate Teddy Liu to co-teach this class with me. In fact, Teddy is the master mind of this course. He is an expert on the people side of digital transformation. Teddy shared his experience and wisdom on this subject matter. In my part, I explored a few digital transformation real-life cases with our students.

It was our honour to have Stephen Leung, Country Manager of #Pfizer Hong Kong and Indonesia, to share his wisdom on leadership, people and change management. It was very valuable and insightful. I was also impressed by his way to share his thoughts. He made good use of interesting stories and fantastic analogies.

Thank you, Stephen. I will remember to drink more water H2O. Healthy, Happy and Optimistic. Thank you, Teddy, to empower me and our students to master the change management and talents strategy in the digital era. Appreciate the great effort behind the scene from my CUHK APIB teammates.

One more day to go for this course. We will have another enlightening leader Joe Wan, CEO of #Tricor, to share his wisdom. Stay tuned.

Elite #startups from #HKSTP Leading Enterprise Acceleration Programme #LEAP showcased their achievement and #innovations today in #HKSTP #InnoCentre. They are some of the best in our ecosystem. Really appreciate Kiki Y. Wang, CFA, MBA, Anvil Ng and their teams to nurture and empower these startups.

Apart from the startups in the LEAP programme, corporate executives, investors, mentors also joined today’s gathering. Felt good to see friends like 陳繼宇Dr. Jason Chan, MH, JP, Harris SUN, Edmund Lee, Patrick S Lee, S.C. Mak & more, and made some new friends.

I particularly like the banner posted today on site. It is a city map which covers our daily works and lives. It includes #Retail, #Logistics, #SupplyChain, #Manufacturing, #Healthcare, #FinancialServices, #Airport, etc. Then, they put the logos of their LEAP startups on the right spots on the map. It helps us visualize where and how these LEAP startups contribute to our works and lives, and collectively build a #SmartCity. You can download the map here.

(Hong Kong) “Power Duo of AI and Big Data” Training for ICBC Asia

I was impressed by #ICBC Asia in the way how their senior management took #AI, #BigData and #FinTech seriously. Usually, most of the senior leaders will only stay for 30 minutes of a training class and will excuse themselves from it. This time was very different.
All their top and senior management, including Chairman and Executive Director, actively participated in my AI and Big Data class. Guess what? They stayed till the very end of my class and actively participated in the whole day.

Really appreciate their leadership to demonstrate and lead by example. Their top management believe that continuous learning is the way to stay relevant and competitive in their financial services industry. By doing it themselves, it brings culture change to their colleagues.

My class today was on the Power Duo of AI and Big Data. It is a part of the Digital Leadership Series that I designed and led for the Asia Pacific Institute of Business #APIB of the #CUHK Business School.

I started my class today with a clear message to the ICBC team that they need to speak one more language on the top of Chinese and English in the digital economy. That is #Data. In order to be a #AIFirst and #DataDriven bank, everyone in the company has to have basic to advanced #DataLiteracy. Reskilling them on data is not an option but a necessity.

We then explained the AI and #MachineLearning technologies, business models and data monetization concepts to them. We also explored new AI applications in #FinancialServices and #DataGovernance with them. “Seeing Is Believing It”. I invited Patrick Tsoi, a veteran in #DataScience to use real data to demonstrate the power of Big Data in financial services. Thank you Patrick, ICBC team and CUHK team.

It is just a good start for the #DigitalTransformation for ICBC Asia. It is a journey and we are happy to contribute along with the team.
