CUHK EMBA Hong Kong’s Got Talent: Highlights from the 2023 Reunion Dinner

CUHK EMBA Hong Kong’s Got Talent was the main theme of our #CUHK #EMBA Reunion Dinner 2023. Really pleased to see many of my EMBA students without masks and with big smiles. They are in fact the core talents of Hong Kong. Well done the organizing team to organize such a great reunion gathering. Thanks for Pong Yuen, Howard Lam and his EMBA teammates for all the effort. Special thank to Professor Andrew Chan for his 30 years of contribution to our EMBA programme. Amazing!

Congratulations to Ryan as he will start his CUHK EMBA journey in Sep this year. Really our honour to have Ryan as our student. Both the CEOs of the leading food delivery platforms in Hong Kong (#foodpanda) and Macau (#澳覓 #Acen), Ryan Lai and 江海涛, are our CUHK EMBA students now. I have taken a memorable photo with them.

Also met my 5 Founding Fellows of DaLa – Data Literacy Association #DaLa there Nixon Chau, Henry Hui, Matthew Chan, Ravel Lai, 鄭嘉泓. Henry and Nixon are also CUHK EMBA alumni. What a small world! Empowering Data Literacy in Macau: DaLa’s First Study Visit

1st DaLa Macau Trip (May 5-6, 2023)

Our Data Literacy Association DaLa had a very fruitful and enjoyable study visit to #Macau in the last two days. We have previewed the impressive Galaxy International Convention Centre GICC, visited ICBC Macau, University of Macau Smart City Lab 澳门智慧城市物联网国家重点实验室, and Macau Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT).

Over 50 people including DaLa’s Founding fellows, tech leaders from Hong Kong, and local IT leaders from Macau, joined our journey. We also hosted a DaLa dinner (Yes, DaLa dinner, not Gala Dinner) in the fabulous venue of Galaxy Macau and invited key leaders from Macau to join it. It was our honour to have senior management from Macau SAR Government, Galaxy, #Wynn, #Melco, #SJM, #澳觅 and more participated our dinner. We all learned a lot from these visits and we also all had fun to have an opportunity to meet new friends and catch up with old friends.

I am so grateful to have all of us being able to join this fruitful and joyful trip with good health after such a long 3 years of pandemic. Heartfelt thank to #Galaxy Macau, #ICBC Macau, University of Macau #UM, and Macau #FDCT for not just hosting us but sharing openly with us. Also, thank you for our sponsors #Google Cloud, #Checkpoint and #Veeam to support and join our study visit.

HKDAS Hackathon 2023

Grateful to have had chances to provide mentorship to so many #blockchain, #web3, #metaverse and #ESG innovators in today’s Hong Kong Digital Asset Society #HKDAS #Hackathon 2023 in Cyberport. I particularly appreciate these innovators’ heart and innovative minds to make use the emerging technologies to find new ways to solve tough problems and create deep social impact.

In the capacity of Industry Advisor of HKDAS together with Edmund Lee and Vincent So, and the Founding Chairman of Data Literacy Association #DALA, we act as mentors together with many experts for today’s hackathon. Thanks Fonia Wong 黃仰芳, Alex Au, Celia Lok and their teammates from HKDAS to have created such a great platform for us to co-create values in the web3 era. Glad to see Mrs Fanny Law, the former Chairman of HKSTP, there as well. Thanks to her continuous support and interest in our innovation and technology ecosystem.

My First Class In The Year Of The Rabbit

My first class in the Year of the Rabbit was a demo class for CUHK EMBA. Really felt warm to see so many knowledge seekers f2f in our classroom. Good thing was that we kept it a hybrid mode where hundreds attended it online in parallel. That is our new normal for the future so more people can learn together even though they are still working or back home with their families.

In my capacity of CUHK EMBA Associate Director and Founding Chairman of Data Literacy Association, I talked about “Stay ahead of Your Conpetition: Treat Data as Your 2nd Business Language”. My key message is that business leaders need to use data daily as how they use English and Chinese for effective and compelling communication. Data is the Voice of our Customers and it is business through data monetization. Business users need to not just be data literate but also treat it as your competitive edge. Own it yourselves instead of just getting help from IT and Data teams. Building a sustainable data culture and empowering every employee with high Data Literacy are the secret sauce of leading enterprises in today’s Digital Economy.

Thanks for my EMBA student Chris So to have shared his learning experience as well as Rendy Ng. Appreciate all participants to have joined our session last night. Thanks to my EMBA colleagues to organize it as well Professor Pong Yuen, Howard Lam, Chun So, Ken Lin and many others.

Chat with Good Friend Herbert Chia 車品覺

Grateful to have a chat with good friend Herbert Chia #車品覺 in my office. We are both enthusiastic and have like minds on data. Both of us have been in the data industry for many years and have been collaborating with lots of synergy.

We discussed plans for 2023 on how we can collaborate even closer to energize Hong Kong on data transformation from talents, data science to data literacy, data culture and data governance.

Herbert has formed the Hong Kong Data Club to empower more data experts and geeks while I founded Data Literacy Association to empower more business and operation leaders, professionals and executives to speak the language of data. We are perfectly synergetic and complementary to each other with a common goal to grow the data economy in Hong Kong.

Herbert has finished another great book called Data-driven Transformation with Allen Yeung. Thanks for giving me a copy with Herbert’s autograph. Both Andy Kwok and I learned a lot from Herbert’s previous books on data. This new one is in English. Lots of great and new inspiration there.

It was a very fruitful discussion. Stay tuned for our joint collaboration on empowering Hong Kong to be a data leader in 2023 and beyond.

Best HR Awards 2022

Congratulations to all the winners of the Best HR Awards 2022 organized by CTGoodJobs. Grateful being one of the judges and speakers for the Awards again. My OpenCertHub Academy team fully supported the ceremony this year. Thanks Vivienne Wong, Shirley Pi, William Ho, Reo Lam and their teammates to organize such a great award ceremony. We enjoyed our great collaboration and teamwork with the CTGoodJobs team.

I particularly appreciate this Awards because it has pioneered quite a few award categories to encourage HR leaders to cultivate digital transformation and innovation initiatives and talent to their organizations.

In this year, Data Literacy Association #DaLa www.DaLaHK.org , which was founded by a number of data leaders and I to nurture data culture in large to small organizations, jointly with CTGoodJobs created a new category called Data Literacy Award. It aims to encourage establishing data culture and enabling pervasive use of data in organizations to unleash the power of data to every employee. Congratulations to The Bank of East Asia #BEA to receive the 1st ever Grand Award of this category in Hong Kong. Really appreciate the great team effort from their FinTech, Data and Training and Development teams. Congratulations Stephen L. Kenny Au, and Doris Tong. My OpenCertHub teammates are so fortune to collaborate with the BEA team to empower their colleagues at all levels of the bank to speak the language of data.

Also happy for many HR leaders in town like Fanny Chan from China Everbright Bank Hong Kong #CEBHK, Eliza Ng #HKPC, Edmund Lam #FubonBank, Derek Wu #LKK, and many others for their amazing achievement. Also good to see young leaders like CY Chan #ECHealthCare, Bobo Wong, Michelle Chan #Microsoft, Mingo Tsang #Bowtie and more. They are with bright minds and our future as well.

As I mentioned in my talk on “Data Literacy – Build Future-proof Workforce with Second Business Language”, Digital Transformation not only needs digital experts but also HR experts as change management and culture play a pivot role in its success. Teamwork between digital teammates and HR teammates are super important. Had a very good chat with Kandy Lui #iHRM and learnt a lot from her on the HR profession and it’s latest development. Also learnt from José Carlos Bezanilla on how to make Hong Kong a Great Place to Work #GPTW.
