Grateful to be in the judging panel of the #Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund/HSBC JumpStarter 2023. It was the first f2f #JumpStarter after the pandemic. Heartfelt thanks to Teddy Lui #AEF and their teammates to organize such an outstanding global competition for entrepreneurs around the world. https://lnkd.in/gDXTweWj

I met Teddy when AEF just started in 2015 in my capacity of Cyberport Chief Public Mission Officer. It is amazing to see that AEF JumpStarter has become a global leading startup competition today. Well done Cindy ChowTeddy Lui and many others at AEF, #Gobi and #HSBC.

Together with other experienced judges today including Cindy Z. #GobiMingles T. #ParticleXRachel Lee #Cyberport, Winnie Lau #HKSTPRicky Lee #KROLLSimon Law #SinoMatthew Yung #HSBC, and Edmond Lau #CityU, we have selected the best startups from the world to proceed to the next round of the competition. Really appreciate all the effort from the participating startups as well and many of them are from ASEAN and even Latin America. Glad to see the global reach of Jumpstarter.

DaLa – Data Literacy Association #DaLa is proud to be a supporting organization of this year’s JumpStarter. Wish all of the stakeholders in the ecosystem can cocreate more values for Hong Kong and the #GBA region. Cheers.

💡Have you ever wondered why Hong Kong could create 18 unicorns (3 were already listed) in the last 8 years? Grateful to have an opportunity to discuss with Cindy Chow, one of elite and pioneering leaders in the Hong Kong startups ecosystem, on this topic in our 🎬🎙#RTHK New Management Thinking programme #管理新思維. Cindy is the Executive Director of the globally-known #AEF Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund. Really appreciate and heartfelt thank to Cindy for her insights and inspiring sharing.

AEF has invested and nurtured more than 60 startups since founded in 2015. 5 of those companies were either unicorns (#Airwallex#AnimocaBrands#WeLab) or listed companies (#GOGOX#Prenetics). Impressive and what a miracle that we had here in Hong Kong! However, we only had less than 0.5% of over 4,000 startups made this list. How can startups learn from the best and enhance their chance of success? I have discussed this theme with Cindy in our programme.

We looked at a few key things in specific.

1. What are the critical success factors and characteristics of the unicorns?

2. What has AEF done to nurture these unicorns?

3. How can we encourage and nurture more young people especially female students to participate in tech entrepreneurship journey?

4. How can we empower our startups to capture the opportunities in #GBA? How can Hong Kong play a pivotal role to empower GBA startups to expand to ASEAN and global market?

5. How do we pick the right startups to invest on? What new direction or types of startups that AEF is looking at? How do we attract the best startups to be our investment portfolio?

If you would like to learn more about all these questions from my discussion with Cindy, please tune in #RTHK1 radio this Sunday Jun 18 from 2pm to 4pm. Stay tuned and don’t miss it. https://lnkd.in/f-X8RaN

Most of us have been using and engaging with these companies like Alibaba, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Netflix, Tencent, and Ctrip. What do they have in common? They are not only the world’s highest valuated businesses but also the world’s most influential platforms. The next generation of Fortune500 companies in the decade of 2020 will be mostly platform-based businesses such as Airbnb, Grab, Robinhood, Spotify, and more.

What is platform? More importantly, what kind of magic do they have to make them so powerful? Platforms, a near-monopolistic business model, are quietly taking over the global economy. These platforms make much of their money not by what they sell but by facilitating the interactions or transactions of others. Traditional product, manufacturers,  brands, and intermediaries (or “the middleman”) incumbents in all major industries are being seriously disrupted by these platforms.

I am going to explore why every one of the businesses has to have the right platform strategy in order to able to compete and even survive in the DigitalEconomy, and how we can formulate a suitable and feasible platform strategy for our businesses even we are a product company now. Stay tuned on April 29.

I would like to share what I learned from my recent visits to 3 leading innovation labs with AI focus in HKSTP. It is all about co-creation. Love it.   IBM Innovation Lab brings their world’s innovation to HK & co-creates solutions using Design Thinking with client & startup to solve their pain points. IBM’s 19 world-class research facilities spread across 12 laboratories on 6 continents with 3,000+ researchers. Thanks for IBM GM of HK Francis Ngai to make this happen. Siemens Innovation Lab focuses on Mobility & SmartCity. Their MindSphere is the cloud-based, open IoT operating system from Siemens that connects our products, plants, systems, & machines, enabling us to harness the wealth of data generated by IoT with advanced analytics. The lab facilities clients and startups to co-create IoT & Big Data innovations. Thanks  to Siemens CEO of Mobility Jens-Peter Brauner to make it happen. Last but not the least, HKAI Lab is a non-profit organization which aims to empower AI startups on technology side & nurture a healthy AI community for HK. The lab is backed by Alibaba AEF Sensetime & STP. They run 2 cohorts per year to select AI startups with cutting edge technology to join them. Thanks for Executive Director of the HKAI Lab Timothy Leung to make this happen.
