Putting Consumers at the Heart ofDigitalInnovation was the main theme of 2019 Consumers International Summit. It was held in the beautiful city Estoril of Portugal. 416 guests from 87 countries were there. It was my honour to be invited byGilly Wong CE of HongKongConsumerCouncil as a speaker in the opening panel session of the summit. https://lnkd.in/f3q8SvD

I shared my view from Asia’s perspective. Asia has a strong drive to innovate based on technology to drive economic growth and solve lots of social issues and inefficiency. It also has the advantage to leap frog the infrastructure layer over many developed economies. However, consumer rights are only in the beginning and valuable experience learned in the West can be applicable to Asia’s digital economy. This summit provided a great platform for mutual learning and understanding.

AI got lots of attention in the summit. Google has come up with a series of AIEthics guidelines based on their human-centric AI principle. It is important to see how these AI Ethics will evolve and apply to real lives.

An artist was on the stage to do live infograph..impressive and great DNA from Portugal. Thanks to the artist..More importantly #ConsumersInternational InternetSociety HKConsumerCouncil

Over 500 students worldwide were in HKUST today to innovate and collaborate together to solve real life challenges from gJardine Restaurant Group JRG KFC PizzaHut.HackUST and HardUST were 2 mainstreams to innovate software and hardware solutions respectively. Well done students and special thanks to the leadership from JRG Matthew Chan and HKUST Donny Siu to initiate and organize such a great programme not just good for JRG and HKUST but also great impact for Hong Kong.

GoGoVan Reeve Kwan KFC Janet Yuen, leaders fromPizzaHut Deloitte Accenture GoAnimate and myself were the final judges. 16 teams were in the final round and 6 winners were selected for seeding fund and cash prizes plus more like internship and services.

I am so glad that more enterprises are reaching out to young students and startups for ideas, solutions, talents and investment. 4 years ago when I had just started in Cyberport, enterprises were not that proactive in engaging with innovation ecosystems. With our joint effort with enterprises, universities, startups, government, investors, regulators, we have been seeing AIA DBS CITI BOC, SCB,Cathay, HSBC, Smartone, and nowJardine to open up to collaborate with external innovation. It is a very healthy trend. Let’s keep it going..

SmartCity I had an opportunity to share my experience with MTR TownGas HKElectric management today on how a Smart City improves our quality of life and drives its economic growth. Thanks for MTR and CUHK invitation. We talked about what a Smart City is and benchmarked Hong Kong with other MegaCity.

3 Major Layers of Smart Cities are: 1. Citizen awareness, usage & satisfaction 2. Smart City applications on 5 areas Safety Mobility Utility Health #Economy 3. Smart City technologies, such as IoT, Edge, 5G, AI, API, OpenData, BigData Blockchain

These 3 critical layers are highly related but the end result would be the values generated to citizens. We talked about key metrics to measure the success of these 3 layers.

Key Takeaways: 1. What are happening in the communities around you? What pains are there? Don’t wait the big guy to lead you. Start from the bottom. Startups do it well here. 2. How SharingEconomy models can solve these issues? How Uberization works? 3. How can we open up more data with proper APIs from government and enterprises to empower citizens, developers, companies to innovate? 4. How do we manage DataSecurity DataPrivacy AIEthics? We talked about GDPR, DistribitedAIDataGovernance.

Have a great Smart City journey.
