Chief Judge of FinTech Award Shares Tips for Winning the Hearts of Judges at 2023 Hong Kong ICT Awards

In the capacity of the Chief Judge of the FinTech Award of 2023 Hong Kong ICT Awards, I have shared my experience and tips on winning the hearts and votes from the judges to the participants of this year’s competition today. Thanks to The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers #HKIB to organize this fruitful mentoring session. Appreciate the leadership from Carrie Leung, the effort from Chung Wan Lam and their HKIB teammates.

Apart from my sharing, we had a panel discussion with 3 other judges and assessors of the Award including Michael Leung #BOA, Jacob Wai, FRM, FFA FIPA, FCMA, CSDP, MHKCS, LLM, MBA #Deloitte and Henry Chang. Thanks for Lionel #HKIB to moderate our panel discussion.

I have included one of my slides on the 12 key advices for entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs as your reference. Let me know if you would like to understand more. I am happy to share with you. I also introduced the Grand Award winners for the last 4 years where I was the Chief Judge. It includes Terence Leung #AIA, 鄭嘉泓 #Wizpresso, Miles Wen (温豪夫) #FanoLabs and Tomas Holub #CoverGo. I shared some insights on how they made it.

We also invited Kevin Leung #Liquid, the Gold Medal winner of last year, to share his experience. Kevin’s sharing was inspring. Here are my 3 picks from Kevin:

1. You are the winner already when you joined this award competition.

2. Keep trying and keep learning. He has tried several times and pivoted many times before he won the Award.

3. Speak slowly and clearly to get your key messages across deep to your judges. Keep it simple but really plant these few key points to the judge’s mind.

Panel Moderation / Conference Chair

RegTech Forum Organized by China Construction Bank (CCB)

What a way to start our 2023! A group of elite FinTech start-ups and leaders from Hong Kong joined me for a RegTech forum today in China Construction Bank Training Centre in Hong Kong. Hundreds of CCB colleagues in various cities of China have participated it online and offline.

This was my 1st event in 2023 and was indeed a great start. Meeting good friends first time this year was just wonderful and warm especially it was f2f. Also, the forum was very fruitful to learn more about RegTech innovation, applications, challenges and best practices in different countries. We also explored how Chinese banks like CCB can leverage Hong Kong experience in regulation and compliance plus the strong drive of FinTech by our regulators and government.

Also, big thank for CCB Training Centre’s colleagues and my teammates’ support.

It has been three years since I visited CCB Training Centre last time because of the pandemic. Once the mainland-HK border reopens on Jan 8, 2023, I am sure we will be there more often. We all hope not just everything is back to normal, but also more FinTech collaboration and value co-creation between HK FinTech ecosystem and mainland banks.

FinTech Award of 2022 HKICT Awards – Mentoring Session

To better prepare the participants for the FinTech Award of 2022 HKICT Awards, we have done a Mentoring Session for the contestants. We are so glad to have experienced judges and assessors, and the 2021 award winners to share their experience.

Thank you Michael Leung and Stephen Lau (Deputy Chief Judge) and Victor Yim and Jacob Wai 韋達人, LLM, MBA, FRM, FCMA, FIPA, CSDP, MHKCS (Chief Assessor) for their insightful sharing. I, as the Chief Judge of the Award since 2019, have also given a speech to share my experience and encourage the participants to learn more from the process.

As a member of the GS1 HK’s IoT Industry Advisor Council, I am glad to join the 16th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao IoT Technology Application Summit co-organised by GS1 HK today in 3 locations, mainland, Hong Kong and #Macau, simultaneously.

Appreciate the effort from Anna Lin, Corinna Fung, Julian Sin #GS1HK, Kingsley Wong #OGCIO, Ivan Lam #ASTRI, 龍勝當 #澳門電腦學會，and certainly counterparts in Guangdong. Glad to see many industry experts there as well Andrew Ling, wilson chong, Vincent So, Ir Dr Venus Lun, Harman Ng, Kinsen Lee, Bryan Peng(彭文俊)Alex Chung 鍾孝揚 and many others.

Great to see the collaboration across 3 regions on IoT applications on various industries. To make our Greater Bay Area or GBA work, we need smart money flow (FinTech and RegTech), smart logistics flow (AIOT) and certainly smart information flow (AI and Big Data). All these flows have to be protected by CyberSecurity and Blockchain.

Thanks for Anna’s leadership and her GS1HK team effort. Look forward to having more collaboration in these areas and contributing more in this alliance across the #GreaterBayArea #GBA in 2022 and beyond.

The good news for this year is that we are witnessing better and stronger teams year from year. Here are the 3 key highlights.

1. We had record high in terms of number of applications this year.

2. We had richer varieties of #FinTech innovations this year, such as #InsurTech, #RegTech, #Tokenization, #AI on HR in Financial Services.

3. We also appreciated more collaboration of FinTech #startups #entrepreneurs and financial services incumbents #leaders to #cocreate better customer experience, products and services, and innovate new business models. From competition to collaboration.

With this foundation and FinTech ecosystem that we have built for Hong Kong, plus initiatives like HKMA #FinTech2025 and #CDI, #GBA, #ESG, #InsuranceConnect, etc., We are expecting even better innovations coming in the next few years.

Congrats to all of you including myself and be grateful to be a part of the FinTech innovation journey for Hong Kong. Thank you.
