Training: AI for Financial Services Course for ICBC (Asia)

Grateful to have Dr. Victor Ng to co-deliver our joint AI for Financial Services course to ICBC (Asia) at CUHK today. Really appreciate the full-day presence of Miss Gao, the Chairman and Executive Director of ICBC(Asia) together with their senior management. That was an excellent Lead-by-Example for all leaders. If you would like to cultivate and change your colleagues, you demonstrate it first. Really appreciate it, Miss Gao.

Dr. Ng and I have designed a Data Literacy Empowerment Programme #DLEP to empower all levels of colleagues in organizations to speak data. Today, I shared about how AI applies to financial services with real cases and examples worldwide while Dr. Ng cultivated the participants on data culture and mindset through experiential exercises. We have been doing it for many enterprises especially banks. What a practical combination to illustrate how leading enterprise is making good use of data to win the hearts of their customers. The most impressive and rewarding part for me and Dr. Ng was the sharing from our students about their findings and suggestions from their team exercises. After we have shared our experiences, our students not only digested the key points well, but also come up with solid suggestions to make changes in ICBC to empower their colleagues to be citizen data scientists and data citizens. More importantly, their own data mindset has changed and they appreciate even more to use data to solve problems. Thanks to all for your effort. We aim to inspire and encourage Sun Life colleagues and ecosystem to co-create values for their customers with data. Good panel discussion as well as interaction with the f2f and online audiences.

I am grateful to have experienced AI and data corporate leaders, entrepreneurs and consultants in town as my panel speakers, including Patrick Khong #HASE, Jacob Wai, FRM, FFA FIPA, FCMA, CSDP, MHKCS, LLM, MBA #Deloitte, Calvin Cheng, CFA #Wizpresso and certainly our host Alex Wong #Sunlife. Really appreciate their insightful sharing. Thanks to SunLife Clement Lam Alice Chuck, Shirley Mak, the supporting team and my CUHK teammates today.

It takes not only IT team effort but also collaboration with data-literate colleagues at all business levels. Senior management’s determination on nurturing a data culture is very important but it is not enough. Pervasive use of data across the enterprise is the key for success. To unlock the values of data, not only IT and Data teams need to do a good job, all others need to see the values of data in their daily jobs and use data as their business language every day.

Hang Seng Bank is a great example and one of the pioneers in Hong Kong to go along this direction. Patrick is leading this change and empowering majority of their workforce on data literacy. They are also nurturing a group of citizen data scientists in different units to act as culture carrier to build, empower and sustain data culture. More here https://lnkd.in/g3PXKFYS.

Jacob and Calvin shared practical approaches to achieve this goal. Alex has also started this journey at Sun Life HK. This direction also aligns well with my vision and experience. My teammates from OpenCertHub Academy and CUHK are supporting quite a few companies in Hong Kong, including Hang Seng Bank, to empower their staff to nurture data culture, mindset and skills. DLEP Programme: Forum Exploring AI Investment

Another bright day today. Apart from the sunny sky today, we did have a fruitful forum with the bright minds from the AI industry and bright talents from the China Everbright Bank Hong Kong Branch #CEBHK. It is a part of our Data Literacy Empowerment Programme #DLEP for CEBHK organized by OpenCertHub Academy #OCHA and Hong Kong Institute of Bankers #HKIB.

Appreciate the valuable insights and experience sharing from our guest speakers. It includes Ken Shih#Saxo#SaxoMarkets, Calvin Cheng, CFA#Wizpresso, Daniel Ling #OneConnect, and Edwin Hui#Capco. CEBHK’s C-suite together with their colleagues have actively participated our panel in their beautiful collaborative space. Thank you so much for the full support from Nancy Wu, Fanny Chan, their CEBHK’s C-suite and teammates. Also grateful to have my teammates from OpenCertHub and OpenCertHub Academy for their great effort behind the scene to make this forum an impactful one.

We went through a number of practical use cases, shared some key challenges, explored how to justify investment on AI in financial services. More importantly, how to nurture a data mindset and culture across the banks. It means from top management to all levels of colleagues have to be engaged and use data everyday.

In fact, MIT Slogan has a new article just published in May 2022. The core message is that Data is a team sport and the entire organization is the team. This requires data democratization, the idea that data should be in the hands of every employee.

We aim to empower employees of an organization at all levels with data literacy. Through the collaboration between the data-literate colleagues from different business units and data experts, their organizations will be able to stay ahead of their competition by unblocking more values from data.

I was impressed by the way Nancy Wu, the Deputy CEO of CEBHK, engaged with us and her colleagues today. Here is how she summarized what she learned today from the forum. Her 3 key takeaways today are.

Today is a bright day with a sunny and clear sky. What a great day to kick off our collaborative partnership with The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers! OpenCertHub Academy (#OCHA) and The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (#HKIB) are joining hands to upskill the data literacy of the executives and practitioners in the #Banking industry.

#Data is one of the most important assets for leading enterprises in today’s #DigitalEconomy. For #FinancialServices, data is the “new gold” or one of the most important assets these days. To unleash the power of data in the banking industry, everyone needs to speak data and treat it as their second business language.

Just having a core team of data scientists is not good enough to fully unleash the business values of data for banks. We are seeing that a few major international and local #banks are empowering the majority of their workforce on data literacy. They aim to embed a data mindset and skills with every possible colleague so that they can make use of data in their daily jobs. They also empower colleagues to communicate effectively and regularly with their data and IT teammates to come up with better and better analytics and data sources.

The prime objective of the “Data Literacy Empowerment Programme”, the flagship programme of OpenCertHub Academy (OCHA), is to democratize data literacy to everyone in a company so that they can seize the opportunities from data monetization and solve business problems with data analytics on daily basis.

The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (HKIB) is one of the major institutes to provide training and certification services to the banking community in Hong Kong. Together, OCHA and HKIB aim to contribute to the growth of data talents in the banking community and enhance the competitiveness of the banking industry in Hong Kong through the pervasive use of data. Appreciate the leadership and trust from HKIB’s Carrie Leung and Philip Kam, and the great support from their teammates, and certainly my OCHA’s teammates Andy Kwok, Dr. Victor Ng, Patrick Tsoi, Candi Yeung and more. We look forward to collaborating with HKIB to co-creating values for the growth of #FinTech in Hong Kong.
