Reviving Offline Conferences: Highlights from Google Cloud Summit Hong Kong 2023

Finally, we could physically join the Google Cloud Summit Hong Kong after the 3 years long pandemic. Over thousand of guests attended the event today. The vibrant and engaging atmosphere was very impressive and full of passion. Thanks the great leadership from Kathy Lee and Disaree (DiDi) Wong to make this happen again in Hong Kong.

Today, we have witnessed many new offerings from Google. Needless to say, it was all about AI. Google really makes AI easier for every one from IT to business users. Impressive demos from June Yang on their innovation and applications on Generative AI. It was eye opener for me. Google and several renowed speakers also talked about democratizing data analytics and AI to users at all levels. Data culture again comes to the top of the list.

I delivered a talk in today’s summit on our experience how we collaborated with Google to empower business users in private and public sectors to make use of data every day as their habits through our Data Literacy Empowerment Programme #DLEP. One after one offline huge conferences have been coming back to Hong Kong. Pumped into friends whom we have not met for years in these occasions. Really felt warm and happy especially seeing old friends Dave Chen, Suk-Wah Kwok, Alex Zhang, Kenny Au, Leo Tsang, CPA, LLM, MSc. Charles Hung, Chris Shum, Eric Or, Charleston Sin, Fuller Yu, Pascal Tse, Allan Wong, Justy Yuen, Derry Fong, Adela Lau and many others.

Also, it is always joyful to see our founding fellows of DaLa – Data Literacy Association #DaLa in any occasions. Today we had Ravel Lai Herman Cheng Stephen L. Andy Kwok Victor Ng Dr. Lana Lo Matthew Chan Jacob Wai, FRM, FFA FIPA, FCMA, CSDP, MHKCS, LLM, MBA Michael Yung, joined the Summit on different capacities.

Unlocking the Secret to Data Monetization: Insights from China CITIC Bank International’s Agile Culture Transformation Room

Change Starts With “YOU”. What a quote posted on the wall of the Agile Culture Transformation #ACT room in the China CITIC Bank International #CNCBI 中信銀行(國際) in Hong Kong. The Bank really understands how important culture is to make any change work. It is so inspiring and a perfect place for us to hold our forum there with the main theme on Data Literacy: From Data Insight to Data Monetization.

The secret sauce of monetizing data asset effectively is in fact Data Culture of the organization. Our audiences were from different business units of the Bank. They also agreed with us that data culture is the top challenge to monetize data asset of the bank.

Frazer Lam, CIO of CNCBI, and I have delivered our speeches to set the scene. We then had a fruitful discussion with Patrick Khong #HKEX, Michael Yung #Google and Victor Ng #OpenCertHubAcademy #OCHA. Really grateful having them in my panel. We all learnt a lot from their sharing. Thank you.

My 3 key takeaways on monetizing data effectively are as follows:

1. Collaboration across business units, IT and Data teams are super important to capitalize data asset.

2. Users at all levels should speak the language of data as their habit to solve problems, seize opportunities and communicate/agrue with stakeholders.

3. Building a sustainable data culture is the most critical success factor for data monetization rather than talent, data, technology, financial support and business cases.

The 2nd Cohort of DLEP Programme in CEBHK

Once again, users at all levels across departments demonstrated that they can make good use of data to create real impact to their customers and companies. We witnessed it once more in the China Everbright Bank Hong Kong Branch #CEBHK today.

Colleagues from different front, middle and back offices at CEBHK have gone through our Data Literacy Empowerment Programme #DLEP organized by Hong Kong Institute of Bankers #HKIB and OpenCertHub Academy #OCHA in the last few months. This was the 2nd cohort already at CEBHK. They were required to do a team project to pick a pain point in the company and use data to tackle the problem.

Today, they presented their projects to the CEBHK’s senior management Nancy Wu, Stephen Chang, Fanny Chan, Carrie Leung #HKIB, Dr. Victor Ng and myself from #OCHA. It was really impressive on not just the business impact created from their data initiatives but also the cross-team collaboration. Thank you so much for the team’s effort and the support from all senior management of CEBHK and Carrie.

In the last few months, Victor, Patrick Tsoi and I have provided a series of data literacy training, shared industry best practices, conducted hands-on workshops and provided mentorship for their team projects to the participants. We are so grateful to see that teams today can apply them so well in solving their real problems. From mindset, skillset to everyday use of data is our goal and we have seen this happening in CEBHK.

Special thanks to Fanny, Elaine and their teammates for their effort and trust to my team from the day 1 of our collaboration. Look forward to co-creating even more impact and values to CEBHK throughout our data literacy empowerment journey at CEBHK.

HKIB Spring Lunch 春茗 for the Year of the Rabbit

What a way to start the Year of the Rabbit with most of the bankers in Hong Kong! Thanks Hong Kong Institute of Bankers to organize such a great Spring Lunch 春茗 today in the Grand Hyatt Hotel. We used to have many CNY spring lunches or dinners in the banking industry but it was gone zero in the Covid period. We all enjoyed the f2f gathering again.

Appreciate the effort from Carrie Leung, Philip Kam and their teammates of #HKIB. Also, thanks to the great leadership from Mr David Kwok. Great to meet and have a chat with Legco Councillor (Financial Services) Hon Ronick Chan JP there as well.

As a strategic partner of HKIB on our Data Literacy Empowerment Programme or DLEP, we were so grateful to have a table there to host friends and partners of OpenCertHub Academy. Really feel warm to see many friends there and thanks for their presence in our table Kenny Au, Doris Tong, Barry Chan, Jacob Wai, FRM, FFA FIPA, FCMA, CSDP, MHKCS, LLM, MBA, 鄭嘉泓, Sunny Cheung, Patrick Khong, Jack NG, Edmund Lam and certainly my teammates Andy Kwok and Victor Ng. Also grateful to meet many friends in person and with joy Fanny Chan, Cheng Burton, Charlotte Wong, Michael Leung, Sammy Ho, Angela Lee, Ryan Fung and many more. Chat with Good Friend Herbert Chia 車品覺

Grateful to have a chat with good friend Herbert Chia #車品覺 in my office. We are both enthusiastic and have like minds on data. Both of us have been in the data industry for many years and have been collaborating with lots of synergy.

We discussed plans for 2023 on how we can collaborate even closer to energize Hong Kong on data transformation from talents, data science to data literacy, data culture and data governance.

Herbert has formed the Hong Kong Data Club to empower more data experts and geeks while I founded Data Literacy Association to empower more business and operation leaders, professionals and executives to speak the language of data. We are perfectly synergetic and complementary to each other with a common goal to grow the data economy in Hong Kong.

Herbert has finished another great book called Data-driven Transformation with Allen Yeung. Thanks for giving me a copy with Herbert’s autograph. Both Andy Kwok and I learned a lot from Herbert’s previous books on data. This new one is in English. Lots of great and new inspiration there.

It was a very fruitful discussion. Stay tuned for our joint collaboration on empowering Hong Kong to be a data leader in 2023 and beyond.

In the meantime, we wish you a healthy, happy and successful Year of the Rabbit. Cheers.

Best HR Awards 2022

Congratulations to all the winners of the Best HR Awards 2022 organized by CTGoodJobs. Grateful being one of the judges and speakers for the Awards again. My OpenCertHub Academy team fully supported the ceremony this year. Thanks Vivienne Wong, Shirley Pi, William Ho, Reo Lam and their teammates to organize such a great award ceremony. We enjoyed our great collaboration and teamwork with the CTGoodJobs team.

I particularly appreciate this Awards because it has pioneered quite a few award categories to encourage HR leaders to cultivate digital transformation and innovation initiatives and talent to their organizations.

In this year, Data Literacy Association #DaLa www.DaLaHK.org , which was founded by a number of data leaders and I to nurture data culture in large to small organizations, jointly with CTGoodJobs created a new category called Data Literacy Award. It aims to encourage establishing data culture and enabling pervasive use of data in organizations to unleash the power of data to every employee. Congratulations to The Bank of East Asia #BEA to receive the 1st ever Grand Award of this category in Hong Kong. Really appreciate the great team effort from their FinTech, Data and Training and Development teams. Congratulations Stephen L. Kenny Au, and Doris Tong. My OpenCertHub teammates are so fortune to collaborate with the BEA team to empower their colleagues at all levels of the bank to speak the language of data.

Also happy for many HR leaders in town like Fanny Chan from China Everbright Bank Hong Kong #CEBHK, Eliza Ng #HKPC, Edmund Lam #FubonBank, Derek Wu #LKK, and many others for their amazing achievement. Also good to see young leaders like CY Chan #ECHealthCare, Bobo Wong, Michelle Chan #Microsoft, Mingo Tsang #Bowtie and more. They are with bright minds and our future as well.

As I mentioned in my talk on “Data Literacy – Build Future-proof Workforce with Second Business Language”, Digital Transformation not only needs digital experts but also HR experts as change management and culture play a pivot role in its success. Teamwork between digital teammates and HR teammates are super important. Had a very good chat with Kandy Lui #iHRM and learnt a lot from her on the HR profession and it’s latest development. Also learnt from José Carlos Bezanilla on how to make Hong Kong a Great Place to Work #GPTW.

DLEP Programme @Bank of East Asia

My belief is that empowering people to do fishing is always better than serving them fish all the time. Our data and IT professionals have been doing a great job to help busness users to prepare reports and analytics so that the users can make better decisions, actions and even predictions. In the highly competitive envirnoment in the digital economy, doing this is simply not good enough to stay relevant.

That’s why we OpenCertHub Academy #OCHA www.ochacademy.com, a passionate and experienced team on data science and data culture, design our Data Literacy Empowerment Programme #DLEP to empower leaders and users at all levels across the whole organizations in major industries, such as financial services, property, transportation, utility, retail and so on, to speak the 2nd business language – Data. What it means is that everyone communicates, argues and wins with data as a habit in their daily conversation, meetings and tasks. We understand customers, seize opportunities and tackle problems through the smart use of data.

We aim to nurture and change the data culture of the organizations through training, data forums with industry experts and startups, cross-team data projects, community and more. Really grateful and thankful to see BEA to have a visionary leadership to go along with us in this journey of data culture transformation. We cultivated a group of Citizen Data Scientists (CDS) as the change agents to drive data culture change in their respective departments. We also have trained over hundreds of Data Citizens (DC) who now have the data mindset to use data more often in their daily jobs. The journey continues and more to come.

We thank for the trust from BEA senior management to us and have us as their trusted companion in the Data Literacy Empowerment journey. Really appreciate the collaboration and teamwork from BEA’s Data Team Kenny Au, FinTech & IT Team Stephen L. and Training & Development Team Doris Tong, and their bright teammates. Thank you! My First-time Visit to the Hong Kong Observatory

It was my first-time visit to the Hong Kong Observatory 香港天文台 #HKO headquarters in TST yesterday. It is on the top of a small mountain in the busy TST district. I can see the advanced devices and technologies as well as the 130+ years of legacy in the beautiful and historical buildings there. What a contrast and learning for this trip of mine!

I was invited to share my experience on how to collaborate with the #innovation and #technology #ecosystem to co-create values for customers and more importantly for citizens in Hong Kong. In fact, HKO has been good at making use of science and technologies but also putting emphasis on serving our citizens. I particularly appreciate their mission on “Innovate with Science, Serve with Heart” https://lnkd.in/d9XBB65J. I am impressed by what they have been doing for our citizens. Thank you.

I have shared how we can make use of data to understand the voice of our citizens and the importance of everyone in HKO to speak the language of data so they can solve the pain points of our citizens even better. Through most of the HKO colleagues are engineering background, they also recognized and agreed enhancing their data literacy with right data mindset and skills to understand citizens and solve customers pain points are very crucial for their success.

Thank you so much for Dr. Cheng, Director of HKO, his top management and staff participating in my sharing. In particular, thanks for their meaningful questions and ideas exchanges as well. DLEP Programme: Forum Exploring AI Investment

Another bright day today. Apart from the sunny sky today, we did have a fruitful forum with the bright minds from the AI industry and bright talents from the China Everbright Bank Hong Kong Branch #CEBHK. It is a part of our Data Literacy Empowerment Programme #DLEP for CEBHK organized by OpenCertHub Academy #OCHA and Hong Kong Institute of Bankers #HKIB.

Appreciate the valuable insights and experience sharing from our guest speakers. It includes Ken Shih#Saxo#SaxoMarkets, Calvin Cheng, CFA#Wizpresso, Daniel Ling #OneConnect, and Edwin Hui#Capco. CEBHK’s C-suite together with their colleagues have actively participated our panel in their beautiful collaborative space. Thank you so much for the full support from Nancy Wu, Fanny Chan, their CEBHK’s C-suite and teammates. Also grateful to have my teammates from OpenCertHub and OpenCertHub Academy for their great effort behind the scene to make this forum an impactful one.

We went through a number of practical use cases, shared some key challenges, explored how to justify investment on AI in financial services. More importantly, how to nurture a data mindset and culture across the banks. It means from top management to all levels of colleagues have to be engaged and use data everyday.

In fact, MIT Slogan has a new article just published in May 2022. The core message is that Data is a team sport and the entire organization is the team. This requires data democratization, the idea that data should be in the hands of every employee.

We aim to empower employees of an organization at all levels with data literacy. Through the collaboration between the data-literate colleagues from different business units and data experts, their organizations will be able to stay ahead of their competition by unblocking more values from data.

I was impressed by the way Nancy Wu, the Deputy CEO of CEBHK, engaged with us and her colleagues today. Here is how she summarized what she learned today from the forum. Her 3 key takeaways today are.
