Glad to have a fruitful discussion with elite #FinTech leaders on the theme of #FinancialInclusion on the 1st day of the 2021 Hong Kong FinTech Week #HKFTW #HKFinTechWeek. We had Tat Lee #WeLabBankVenetia Lee #AlipayDavid Rosa #Neat and myself in our panel moderated by Karen Man #BakerMckenzie.

My 3 key takeaways from our panel are:

1. Large FSIs and FinTechs need to be customer centric on empowering the #SMEs and under privileges to make use of finance to change their lives. It is not just a business model to make money but also a very meaningful PURPOSE. That aligns all key stakeholders to collaborate.

2. #Data is key for the success of financial inclusion. #FSI is a regulated industry. Banks need to use #DataScience to seize opportunities and manage the risk of financial inclusion while SMEs can make use of data to identify areas to improve their credit scores.

3. The success of Financial Inclusion needs #DataLiteracy democratization. Data is our customer voice in particular we need to deal with massive number of customers in the financial inclusion market. Every one in FSI needs to be reskilled or upskilled to be a #CitizenDataScientist. Major financial services incumbents are proactively working towards this direction.

See you on the Day 2 (Thu, Nov 4) in the following panel. I will talk to the senior executives of #HSBC on the theme – Building Billion Dollar Ecosystems.

The #CPA Conference 2021: Transcending Together. Grateful to see that #HKiCPA Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants has successfully organized their #f2f annual conference today.

It was not easy for sure as we were still having lots of challenges under the Covid-19. Thanks for the leadership from Raymond Chung Ching Cheng, President of the HKiCPA, and his teammates like Rosalind Lee, Horace Ma, Jonathan Ng to organize this event and invited me to be one of the panel speakers. Over 200 members joined this inspiring event. Congratulations.

The conference invited great speakers to share their experience. We really learned a lot from Kenny Sham from #LEGO as well as many others like Edwin Morris from #JebsenTeddy Liu. I was impressed how they innovated in the pandemic period. Kenny said that the traffic was dropped from 3,000+ visitors per shop daily down to 3. If you were LEGO, what were you going to do apart from scaling down, cutting cost, etc. They didn’t.

LEGO launched a number of innovative programs like Lego Brick at Home, Cross Girl Virtual Pop-up Store (AR), etc. They performed great in terms of not only sales but also customer engagement, branding, sustainability and staff loyalty. In essence, truly understanding the pains of different customer segments in the pandemic and being able to solve these problems using #innovation and #technology, and the established trust among colleagues made the difference.

I was in another panel on digital transformation. We had experts from the #Accounting and #Finance industry and certainly #DigitalTransformation, including Andrew Lee #EYDickman Chiu from #Bitmex, Michael Chan #Vis and Jeffrey Chan #GrantThornton. We agreed that change management, culture, purpose, collaboration and most importantly people are the key for success in digital transformation.

My final recommendation for the audiences was, rather than worrying about #AI may replace some of their jobs, to proactively #upskill themselves, especially on their #DataLiteracy and empower their companies to transform. In the context of this change, both the company and the finance people will have a chance to learn from the journey especially unleashing the power of #data and monetizing data. That experience will benefit not only the company but also the employees for better career options in the #DigitalEconomy.

Great to meet old and new friends there too Venus Tang (鄧麗華) Francis Fong Mandict Wong Johnson Kong and many others.

I am grateful to have Anna Lin #GS1HK as my guest in another episode of the #ToaSirDataTalk #ToaSir講數 series. Anna has been with #GS1 for 30 years and brought standards and rich experience to the #SupplyChain and #Retail industries in Hong Kong and the region.

We talked about how these industries have been making use of #data in the past 3 decades and the future decade. GS1 plays a vital role in #GlobalTrade#eCommerce and #O2O business. 6 billion GS1 #Barcodes scanned global daily. Data captured in these processes are very useful and powerful.

Anna pointed out that, from the beginning till now, #Digitization was important so everything could be easily managed and tracked in an effective and efficient ways. With processes and standards in place by using technologies like #RFID#IOT, the next important key step is #DataIntelligence. That is how to make good use of the captured data in our digitization phases to enhance our business, create values for customers and generate innovative business models.

What’s next? #SmartKiosk#AIOT#2DBarCode and more will further integrate data from supply chain and retail. Data analytics are the key. GS1 HK and #OpenCertHub shared the same vision. GS1 believes that a standardized barcode and further generation of the standard is the global language of business while OpenCertHub believes that data is the next business language apart from English and your local language.

Both organizations joined hands to launch a series of #BigData certification training to all levels of employees to strengthen their #DataLiteracy so that they unlock the value and power of the data generated in the supply chain and retail. We aim to #reskill and #upskill today’s leaders and workforce with the ability to analyze, communicate and argue with, storytelling about data, and most importantly making decision and taking actions based on data.

Thanks both #GS1HK and #OCH teams. Stay tuned on how to access my “Toa Sir Data talk” with Anna and other episodes in the series.

I was impressed by #ICBC Asia in the way how their senior management took #AI#BigData and #FinTech seriously. Usually, most of the senior leaders will only stay for 30 minutes of a training class and will excuse themselves from it. This time was very different.
All their top and senior management, including Chairman and Executive Director, actively participated in my AI and Big Data class. Guess what? They stayed till the very end of my class and actively participated in the whole day.

Really appreciate their leadership to demonstrate and lead by example. Their top management believe that continuous learning is the way to stay relevant and competitive in their financial services industry. By doing it themselves, it brings culture change to their colleagues.

My class today was on the Power Duo of AI and Big Data. It is a part of the Digital Leadership Series that I designed and led for the Asia Pacific Institute of Business #APIB of the #CUHK Business School.

I started my class today with a clear message to the ICBC team that they need to speak one more language on the top of Chinese and English in the digital economy. That is #Data. In order to be a #AIFirst and #DataDriven bank, everyone in the company has to have basic to advanced #DataLiteracy. Reskilling them on data is not an option but a necessity.

We then explained the AI and #MachineLearning technologies, business models and data monetization concepts to them. We also explored new AI applications in #FinancialServices and #DataGovernance with them. “Seeing Is Believing It”. I invited Patrick Tsoi, a veteran in #DataScience to use real data to demonstrate the power of Big Data in financial services. Thank you Patrick, ICBC team and CUHK team.

It is just a good start for the #DigitalTransformation for ICBC Asia. It is a journey and we are happy to contribute along with the team.

“The Power Duo of AI and Big Data” is one of my favorite courses in our #CUHK Digital Leadership Series for Executives. In the last 2 days, I have delivered this class to the #ChiyuBank #集友銀行 in Hong Kong & Xiamen. Thanks for Michael Chan, Executive Director of the Chiyu Bank, to kickoff the class & his support.

I have shared my #BigData & #AI experience from #MachineLearning #Algorithms #DataLiteracy concepts to innovative applications in #FinancialServices #FinTech & #ResponsibleAI. Apart from lectures, case studies & group discussions, I have invited 2 AI experts to share their experience. My heartfelt thanks to my guest speakers Calvin Cheng, CFA from Wizpresso & Daniel Ling from OneConnect Financial Technology.

I encouraged more interaction from my students in the class. The most engaged students were given a copy of my book #數碼力大提升 with my signature and personalized message. Congratulations to 3 winners today.

Grateful that more and more enterprises and their executives are taking the courses in our #DigitalLeadershipSeries for executives to empower & #reskill themselves to be competitive & relevant in the #DigitalEconomy.

Will #PostgreSQL replace #Oracle to become the world’s leading #database in the #DigitalEconomy? What is PostgreSQL? Why should corporate leaders (not just IT) care about it?

PostgreSQL is a powerful, open source object-relational database system that uses & extends the #SQL language combined with many features that safely store & scale the most complicated data workloads. It originated from the POSTGRES project at the University of California at #Berkeley 30 years ago.

For years, PostgreSQL has been on the rise, even as Oracle & #MySQL (its open source database) have faded. PostgreSQL is now a strong fourth place, with #MongoDB right behind it. Its popularity is not just because of codes sharing and cheap, but also its functionality & scalability.

The mission of #OpenCertHub is to empower business & IT executives with #DataLiteracy & #OpenSource technologies as they are the crucial competence for entreprises & individuals in the Digital Age. As Chairman of OpenCertHub & Chairman of the Open Sources Development Committee (#OSDC) HK, I will give a keynote speech in the annual PostgreSQL Conference in GZ China on Jan 15-16. OSDC will empower HK community to learn and use PostgreSQL. Thanks Emil Chan Happy Lee Andy Kwok.

Glad to share my view on the opportunities & challenges in #GBA with 2 passionate, innovative & elite #CEOs of two #Tech #startupsAndy Kwok #OpenCertHub and Wiva Wei #MatrixSense from Hong Kong today. We were interviewed by CTgoodjobs on the theme of preparing talents to seize the opportunities and manage challenges in the #GreaterBayArea.

#GBA is a new market to many startups. It has its own uniqueness & challenges but at the same time it has huge market potential. Whenever we enter into a new market, we will have these issues. GBA has no difference. Hong Kong talents can go after this market gradually. From knowing the market, building the people networks, identifying product-market fit to engaging with the right partners and investors.

In terms of skills, apart from Putonghua, Cantonese and English, the young talents need to pick up another important language called #DataLiteracy. Enterprises in GBA badly need not just IT staff but also non-IT staff to master data literacy to sharpen their competitiveness locally and globally.

Appreciate Cindy Chan and Regina Tam Natalie Fong from #CTgoodjobs for the interviews. Will share the contents once it is published. Stay tuned.

Many of the offline classes & forums have been canceled or postponed due to the Cornavirus outbreak. Fortunately, technology can keep learning as usual. A group of big data experts has made use of technology to share their experience online on the topic of BigDataLiteracy in the DigitalEconomy.

HKPC together with OpenCertHub organized an online forum on the topic “The Most Wanted Data Technology Talent”. In this decade, AI & Big Data skill will be a necessity for everyone, not just IT & data scientists. We need IQ, EQ & now DQ in order to compete and survive. DQ stands for DataQuotient or DataLiteracy. Every business leader and executive needs to boost their DQ in order to be able to create data-driven business models and monetize their data. It is a common language like English that we use it for our business worldwide. Please refer to my previous article for more. https://lnkd.in/fwqbUff

Reskilling everyone of us to be a CitizenDataScientist has become an urgency in this decade no matter what industry & what position we are in now. Hundreds of audiences from a diverse background has joined the online forum. Glad that they have started aware of this urgency.

Thanks Patrick Tsoi , Daniel Yuen, Andy Kwok, HKPC Edmond Lai, Karen Fung, Desmond Chan, & the audiences joined the forum.

Traditional companies can compete well in the DigitalEconomy if they can reskill & empower their employees with BigData capabilities & DataLiteracy.  Adsale, a leading exhibition services company in Asia, is a great example.

My team & I have conducted a 2 days big data workshop to Adsale’s 60+ employees from top to middle mgt, from sales to ops. The learning culture of Adsale is what I admired the most. A traditional company has the practice to keep innovating & learning every year, from DesignThinking, to BigData & AI. Big Data is an enabler but an innovative culture is the key for any big data project success. In today’s digital era, every company needs to be DataDriven & every employee needs to be CitizenDataScientist in order to have the right to compete.

We talked about the core concepts, applications, monetization, platform, cases, implementation, challenge, org issues, prioritization, governance & more. I also invited big data startups LivelyImpact ClareAI Luna2 Radica to share their innovations & IT veteran Andrew Ling to share his experience as CIO of several major traditional companies. All these discussions were fruitful & practical.

Thanks to all guests, Adsale’s mgt & their teammates, my partner Ivan Ng for their active participation.

BigData is the Secret Sauce of today’s most successful companies like Amazon, Alibaba, etc. What does it mean to Accounting and Finance professionals, leaders of traditional enterprises and individuals’ career?

I have delivered a series of sharing sessions in Malaysia on these topics and generated lots of interests here. All the audiences were serious to learn the secret sauce and how to prepare their companies and themselves ready for this inevitable change. Empowering majority of workforce to be data literate & CitizenDataScientist is the key to be a DataEnterprise, innovate data driven business models & monetize big data effectively. Please find out more about Citizen Data Scientist from one of my advising companies OpenCertHub and www.opencerthub.com.

Thanks for ACCA, MiCPA, MDEC, 6Biz, ADAX my teammates in HK and KL, and many others’ support to make these forums possible. Met lots of great accountants, auditors CFO, business leaders, young entrepreneurs, university professors and certainly big data and AI practitioners. Special thanks to Dato’ Vimmy Yap Datuk Dr. Stanley Yap (Professor) Paul W Chan Dato’ Robert Teo Kean Sim Woon Jack Lee Carmen Thong Shun Shun Aishvarya Lakshimy (Aishu) MMIM, CPC (TCI) Poo Kuan Hoong and many others.
