(Hong Kong) “The Power Duo of AI & Big Data” Programme in CUHK

In today’s #DigitalEconomy, executives & professionals have a sense of urgency to master “The Power Duo of AI & Big Data”. In the last 2 days, I delivered an executive class on this. I am so grateful to have a class of highly-engaged students across industries. We had fruitful discussion on the opportunities & challenges of #AI & #BigData. Thanks to my fellow students.

My career journey has been highly related to data from my 1st job in #SiliconValley #Informix #RDBMS to later #BI, #DW #BigData & #AI. My key takeaway from this journey is not just technology but also how to make use of data to create value for our customers & capture value for our companies.

The students learned about applications & technologies of AI, #MachineLearning & Big Data through cases #Airbnb, #StitchFix #Lemonade #SquirrelAI #Linkedin #Uber #MasterCard.

(Hong Kong) Emerging Tech in China for Imperial College UK

#TECH in #China becomes a hot topic in the West these days. I have conducted an online class on “Emerging TECH in China” to the fellow executive students from one of the top universities in Europe, the #ImperialCollege Imperial College London. It is a part of the one week program of #CUHK The Chinese University of Hong Kong to the Imperial College Business School in #London.

I talked about the Tech landscape, the #startup #ecosystem and #CorporateInnovation in China. I covered hot topics like the foreign market and investment strategy, self-reliance capabilities, #5G, #AI, #Semiconductors, Corporate #intrapreneurship, talents, #GreaterBayArea, #HangSengTechIndex, tech giants returning from #Nasdaq to Hong Kong and Shanghai #StockExchanges, etc.

I used a number of cases like #Baidu, #Alibaba, #Tencent, #ByteDance, #TikTok, #AntFinancial, #SenseTime, #PingAn, #Haier, #Huawei, #BYD, #XiaopengMotors, #Hema, #Xiaomi, #Qihoo360, #SequoiaCapital, #IDGCapital, #MatrixPartners as examples to show the strength and potential risks of China Tech.

The Imperial College’s students showed great interest on this topic, were engaged well and asked lots of sensible questions. I also learned a lot from their views and feedbacks as well. Thank you so much for their active participation.

The world’s top 5 companies are #Platform in terms of Market Cap. They are #Microsoft, #Apple, #Amazon, #Alphabet, #Facebook, not the traditional leaders. Successful unicorns are mainly platforms like #Uber, #Airbnb I have designed a 2 days Platform Strategy & Breakthrough training program for executives to learn & unlock the potentials of platform business models for their companies. The training was done last week. The participants were from #FinancialServices, #Retail, #Telecom. We have discussed a few inspirational cases #Airbnb, #ZBJ, #XFire, #Qihoo, #Dianrong, #Quicken, #Adobe, #Nike, #Hema, etc. The participants learned about the best industry practices of platform like #NetworkEffect, #ChickenAndEgg, #Multihoming, #Disintermediation, #Monetization #Governance, etc. I have also invited Norman Tam from #Tencent & Samuel C.H. Wan from #Stockviva to share their wisdom to design, run, monetize, govern their platforms. It was very useful. To thank them & my students for a fruitful two days, everyone received my book #數碼力大提升 with my autograph. (Hong Kong) How We Can Make Use of Technologies to Save Lives and Do Social Good

Thanks for Edmund Lee and his teammates at #HKDC Hong Kong Design Centre to organize this year’s #KODW Knowledge of Design Week with theme on Designing Digital Future. It is a hybrid of virtual and physical conference with renowed #design and #digital experts around the globe as speakers.

Edmund’s team really gave us an excellent example of what the HK Design Centre always empowers us i.e. #CustomerCentricity. I can feel the details and processes that his team has been putting together to run this conference and helping every speaker and panelist in such a difficult period under Covid-19. Well done and appreciate it, team.

My discussion with Romeo Durscher from #DJI was very fruitful. One of the key takeaways for me is how his company connects many experts in #Drone, #AI, #MachineLearning and #BigData around the world through #Crowdsourcing and #SharingEconomy to build innovative models, technologies and applications to solve lots of problems in natural disasters, safety, health, etc.

For all #innovators and #entrepreneurs, while we may make money from our innovations, it is more important how we can make use of technologies to save lives and do social good. Great lesson today. Thanks Romeo.

1. Accelerate our biz to ASEAN & mainland China particularly the Greater Bay, not just HK
2. Set up an international team with leaders & staff in foreign countries
3. Look for partnership & investment from the companies in the just-born Hang Seng Internet and Information Technology Index #HSIII
4. Focus more on business model innovation as we have the market scale with lots of pain points
5. Speed up #DeepTech R&D with universities in HK and funding from the mainland

It is challenging time for our startups for sure. #Cyberport, #HKSTP & many ecosystem stakeholders are offering programs and fundings to our startups to overcome this challenging time. We shall overcome.

Just completed teaching our #CUHK #MBA AI and Machine Learning Applications in #FinancialServices course tonight. I was impressed by our students’ final project presentations. The theme was how financial services incumbents or FinTech start-ups made use of AI and ML. Our students chose #Citi, #HangSengBank, #JD, #SenseTime and #WeChat for their group projects. Well done, teams.
