It is my honour to be the Chief Judge of this year’s Award. My heartfelt thank to all the judges and assessors for their contributions to this year’s Award and their professional advices.

Thanks to #HKIB Hong Kong Institute of Bankers and #OGCIO to organize such a great Award to encourage FinTech #innovations for Hong Kong. Appreciate #HKIB Carrie Leung Philip Kam and their teammates to make today’s presentation ceremony a successful and safe one.

(Hong Kong) WeLab Group Visit – One of the HKICT Awards Winners

Right after our Hong Kong FinTech Week 2020 last week & right before the announcement of the 2020 #HKICTAwards FinTech Award Winners tomorrow, I visited the CEO of the leading FinTech company in Hong Kong i.e. Simon Loong of WeLab Group today.

#WeLab is one of the leading #FinTech #Unicorns in the world. They pioneered so much that we, #startups or #incumbents, can learn from them. Thanks for Simon’s & Professor Chan’s leadership.

“Inspiring Workspace” is what I described their headquarters. I see young professionals with passion. I see #DNA of an Unicorn. I particularly love the quotes on the wall, e.g., “Never Not My Job” reminds us the importance of #Agility & “Stay Hungry” reminds us the importance of #Sustainable #Innovation. Great #culture!

I also learnt their history from the Bell on the wall (They rang the bell when they hit performance target), #永樂街 (their 1st office), table tennis table (once was their workbench), van, little unicorn..

Special thank to Simon to write a Preface for my book #數碼力大提升。He also shared copies of my book to his teammates. Really appreciate it. Look forward to writing the next chapters of WeLab in many years ahead.

Winning Tips for 2020 HKICT Awards’ Participants (also other key startup competitions)

300+ participants of HKICTAwards 2020 joined a briefing session organized by OGCIO &  HKPC. Competition judges & award winners have shared their experience. Thanks Sunny Lee Kingsley Wong Agnes Mak & Dr. Chris Leung.

Almost 50%  participants are their first time joining HKICT Awards. The speakers’ sharings were very useful to them. I am the Chief Judge of the FinTech Award & have experience in hundreds of worldwide competitions. Let me share some thoughts here.

My key messages are:

1. Mindset: The participants are all winners already as this process will facilitate them to learn from the judges, participants, etc.

2. Critical Thinking: Get someone outside your comfort zone to challenge you. If you’re a corp, get startups & investors to critically review yours & vice versa.

3. Hockey Stick: BusinessModel solving a big pain point with scalability & explosiveness as a hockey stick

4. Team Mix: Do u have a good mix of domain, biz mind, entrepreneur, technologist, finance expert in your team?

5. WoW: Do u have a WoW in your innovation? How unique is it?

6. KYJ: Know Your Judges. Different judges have different appetites. Predict what they ask.

Then, Practise & Rehearse more. Join local, mainland & international hackathon accelerator pitching to learn more.

2020 HKICT Awards FinTech Award is coming again.  Many FinTech heroes in town were the winners of this award in the last few years such as CoverGo Tomas Holub in 2019.

The FinTech Award is composed of three streams: 1. Banking, Insurance and Capital Markets 2. Emerging Solutions 3. Regulatory Technology and Risk Management* (*Includes FinTech Security).
