FinTech MetroRadio Cyberport MetroFinance 金融科技大本營 Season 2. Hong Kong FinTech Season 2 has just started last week on Metro Finance Radio Channel FM104. It is our 2nd series to talk about the latest development of FinTech in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is getting into a new FinTech Era in 2019 with the launch of Faster Payment System, Virtual Bank, Open API, Common QR Code plus the uprising key clusters like Blockchain, InsurTech, RegTech and more. #CUPP #Cyberport #ChicagoBooth #FINTECH Cyberport University Partnership Programme (CUPP) 2018 was successfully launched today in Cyberport. CUPP aims to nurture local university students on FinTech entrepreneurship through a bootcamp in a top foreign university. We went to Stanford University Graduate School of Business in the last 3 years. It is the 4th year of our CUPP and we are going to another world-leading business school – The University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
The students will take a series of training on FinTech before their US trip. Classes will be delivered by FinTech startups, financial services company, BIG4, technology experts, regulators. The students will join the bootcamp in Chicago and visit top FinTech and technology companies there. Experienced mentors will help students. Students will present their final prototypes and business plan in 3 months. The winners will be awarded seed funds from Cyberport to help the students realize their dreams.

2018 MIT Technology Review EmTech Hong Kong was successfully held today. Cyberport is pleased to be the Host Partner of such a world-class conference.
This year’s main theme is “Emerging technologies that matter”. Top researchers, scientists and entrepreneurs worldwide shared their top-notch technological innovations with the audiences today. Over 300 industry practitioners, business leaders and academia from Hong Kong, mainland China and Asia joined the conference.
I also picked up great insights from the inspirational speakers. Thanks for the organizers including MIT Technology Review, koelnmesse and my Cyberport team, speakers and audiences to make today a fruitful day for everyone. Bosco Lin from #Alipay HK, Sunny from #Octopus, Helena Chen from #Mastercard joined the forum with a few hundred audiences. I shared the FinTech landscape first and then we discussed the current adoption, latest technologies, cybersecurity, data privacy in the mobile payment era. The guests gave a very balanced view on the topic as they are coming from Hong Kong, mainland China and the US.
Cash and coins are still playing a key role in Hong Kong and that’s where mobile payment can add the most values on. When I asked the guests, “Are you guys competitors?”, what do you think how they responded? They said they in fact give more options to citizens and merchants, such as QR code and NFC. It is too early to compete until the adoption of mobile payment is getting higher in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong has been improving in terms of FinTech adoption. With mobile payment is getting more success, so will the other FinTech areas such as alternative financing, robo-advisor, etc. Regulators will launch faster payment, open API, virtual bank, etc. Thanks to all the guests and hkuspace.
Not just Shenzhen and Hong Kong are active in innovation and technology industry, so is Macau. Macau has released their Smart City plan and is working on cloud, smart transportation, smart health and so on.
I have met with the 3 major universities in Macau, including Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), Macau City University (MCityU) and University of Macau (UMAC), to exchange ideas. For instance, MUST has set up an institute on Blockchain, MCityU has started their Faculty of Finance with focus on FinTech, and UMAC has a number of Data Science initiatives. I also shared my FinTech experience with the graduate Finance programme students of MCityU. They were very eager to learn FinTech.
I also visited the core innovation and technology as well as FinTech parties in Macau. It includes the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT), Macau Young Entrepreneur Incubation Center, Monetary Authority of Macau and Macau Institute of Financial Services, etc.
With the rapid development of the Greater Bay Area, opening of the bridge connecting Macau, Hong Kong and Zhuhai, the upcoming license renewal of Macau casinos, there will be more opportunities evolved for I&T companies.
