My First-time Visit to the Hong Kong Observatory

It was my first-time visit to the Hong Kong Observatory 香港天文台 #HKO headquarters in TST yesterday. It is on the top of a small mountain in the busy TST district. I can see the advanced devices and technologies as well as the 130+ years of legacy in the beautiful and historical buildings there. What a contrast and learning for this trip of mine!

I was invited to share my experience on how to collaborate with the #innovation and #technology #ecosystem to co-create values for customers and more importantly for citizens in Hong Kong. In fact, HKO has been good at making use of science and technologies but also putting emphasis on serving our citizens. I particularly appreciate their mission on “Innovate with Science, Serve with Heart” https://lnkd.in/d9XBB65J. I am impressed by what they have been doing for our citizens. Thank you.

I have shared how we can make use of data to understand the voice of our citizens and the importance of everyone in HKO to speak the language of data so they can solve the pain points of our citizens even better. Through most of the HKO colleagues are engineering background, they also recognized and agreed enhancing their data literacy with right data mindset and skills to understand citizens and solve customers pain points are very crucial for their success.

Big thanks to our guest speakers Lorraine Cheung #Yahoo, Chris Wang #AWS, Kevin K T Lee #Redspots and Henry Chu #PillnPillow. Two of them are entrepreneurs and the other two are platform providers. That enabled us to discuss this topic from a more balanced perspective.

We discussed from MetaVerse opportunities, challenges to technologies, platforms, talents requirement and future skills. MetaVerse is not a hype but the direction is still being shaped. It is very early so everyone gets a chance but we need to keep learning and be open minded.

In essence, there are a few things that we need to strike a balance in order to make the best out of this unprecdented opportunity for the decade – MetaVerse.

1. The next 5 to 10 years will have lots of opportunities. By 2030, the market is going to reach 5 trillion USD globally. At same time, lots of regulations and governance needed to be in place to balance the opportunities and potential problems.

2. We have more opportunities from scalability to the global markets but at the same time competitions from global players.

3. New digital skills will be required but soft skills, like problem solving, communication, project management are equally important.

4. #Data analytics, #MachineLearning and #AI are crucial now and even more pivotal in the MetaVerse for customer experience and engagement.

5. SMEs are lack of resources and talents but lots of good partners in the MetaVerse ecosystem that they can leverage on.

6. Keep trying and learning to get started but be aware of the risks like losing Crypto from your hot wallets.

RTHK Radio 管理新思維: Interviewing AECOM

Back to the RTHK station today for recording another episode of New Management Thinking 管理新思維. Found a classical radio in 1950 there powered by Vaccum Tube. Oh, WOW! That actually made me think about my childhood with my whole family around a radio like this. It was as advanced and luxurious as what we have a 8k TV today. More importantly, a much more warmth and intimacy with my family back then. What a memory! Transforming a city from an old model to a smart city is like improving from a vintage radio to a 8K TV. Let’s talk about Smart City this time and why every citizen in Hong Kong should care about it. Grateful to have Thomson Lai, the Asia Digital Head of AECOM, as my guest for another fruitful episode in the RTHK’s New Management Thinking 管理新思維. #AECOM is one of key contributors in planning and building our city of Hong Kong in the last 60+ years. Received a book from Thomson called “Hong Kong Created Together”. Lots of Hong Kong’s history from nobody to one of the top cities with world-class infrastructure. Thanks the contribution from Thomson and his AECOM 艾奕康 colleagues. We started talking about what a smart city is. Then we discussed what Hong Kong has been doing in the journey of becoming a smart city, how other leading cities are doing, what key stakeholders are in a smart city and how they are empowering our city as a smart city. GS1HK: The First HK IoT Industry Advisory Council (IAC) Meeting

What a day to start our 1st GS1 HK IoT Industry Advisory Council (IAC) meeting! Today is the date that our HKSAR Government starts relaxing some preventive measures for the Covid. We can now have more choices and freedom to eat, exercise, massage, go to movies, meet up with friends, families and partners, and more.

I am so honoured and grateful to be the new Chairman of the IAC and have a chance to collaborate with two well-experienced Vice-Chairpersons Susanna Shen and Patrick Tsang. Special thanks to Anna Lin and her teammates Julian Sin, Mignone Cheng, Philip YK Choi, MBA and more for their great support.

We are so glad that our IoT IAC has great support from the industry. Thanks for Ir Dr Hon LO Wai-kwok, GBS, MH, JP, Member of the Legco Council (Functional Constituency – Engineering) to be one of our honourable advisors. In addition, thanks for the continuous support from Ir. Eric Chan#Cyberport, Dr. Crystal Fok#HKSTP and many other leaders and experts from the industry.

Established in 2013, the Hong Kong Internet of Things Industry Advisory Council brings like-minded companies under the auspices of GS1 Hong Kong together to promote IoT adoption in Hong Kong, uplift the competitiveness of local companies and create an IoT ecosystem in Hong Kong. (Hong Kong) “Toa Sir Data Talk” Share Tips & Examples in Telecom Industry

The 2nd episode of our #ToaSirDataTalk#ToaSir講數 interview series is now ready to watch. Our guest speaker this time was Mr. Daniel Kwong, the former Chief Information and Innovation Officer of #CITIC#Telecom.

Daniel shared practical tips and examples to get the most out of data for his company. We also discussed how to acquire, train and engage data scientists. In addition, Daniel shared how to nurture a data culture in his company to get non-IT colleagues across business and operation units to make use of data to seize revenue opportunities and enhance operation efficiency.

Really learned a lot from Daniel. Appreciate his sharing and thank you. That is the key objective of our programme “Toa Sir Data Talk” i.e. invite experienced business and data leaders to share their industry best practices and data strategy on making use of data in their businesses and operations.

Grateful that Hang Seng Bank, one of the major banks in Hong Kong, is determined to become a data-driven leader in the financial services. Appreciate the vision and leadership from the bank’s senior management to make this happen. It really sets a great example for Hong Kong companies to treat data as their strategic asset and how data play a game changer role in the Digital Economy.

Apart from data and technology parts, Data Literacy is equally critical for the success of a data-driven enterprise. Apart from English and Chinese, do you speak #Data? According to Gartner, Data is the second business language in the Digital Economy. Every employee, not just data team and IT team, needs to speak data to communicate with, argue with and persuade customers, colleagues, bosses, investors, partners, literally everyone around you. This is one of the top Future Skills ranked by almost all leading research firms.

It is my pleasure and honour having this opportunity to lead and deliver our Data Literacy Empowerment Programme #DLEP to the bank. DLEP aims to democratise data literacy to the majority of the workforce through a series of data literacy executive roundtables, experiential workshops, group projects, mentoring sessions, hackathons and more for the bank. It emphasizes on data mindset and culture, data storytelling, machine learning applications and hands-on experience. Thanks to the trust and support from Hang Seng Bank’s senior management especially the leadership from Patrick Khong, CDO of HASE, my CUHK’s teammates and OpenCertHub Academy’s data experts.

Higher customer expectations on digital experience and keen competition from data savvy banks and FinTech startups are some of key drivers for us to create this DLEP programme. In fact, it happened in not just financial services but also most of the major traditional industries.

For instance, they used data to find the most effective way to deliver training to different levels of employees. Excellent examples of making use of data for customer excellence.

It was the Friday night before the Christmas. People will usually go out shopping, gathering and having fun. Really appreciate the participants who came tonight to my talk to learn about digital transformation. I saw not only some new faces but also my #EMBA students who came with their other halves to learn together. Thanks Anita Chan, Cecilia, .. Impressive and encouraging.

Also thank those on Zoom like my DBA learning partner Fareeda Cassumbhoy. Hope all of you got some inspiration from my talk and at the same time enjoying your favorite wine at home in Friday night.

Today’s talk was a CUHK EMBA Sample class organized by our EMBA directors Pong Yuen, Howard Lam, Chun So and their teammates. Thanks for their effort and the great learning attitude of our participants. Over 250 registrations for this session. Wow… we are back!

I asked every participant to drop down 3 words as tonight’s key takeaways. Words like #Data, #Innovation, #Customer, #Urgency, #Relevancy, #Ecosystem, #Platform, and more came out. I was impressed by how much they were inspired in only a little bit over 60 mins. Really appreciate their effort.
