Beyond the Classroom: Empowering Executives with Real-World Insights

I was so honored and amazed to receive my 3rd consecutive Faculty Teaching Merit Award from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on this year’s Mother’s Day, which was a truly special occasion. Concurrently, I had the privilege of teaching an intensive 4-day EMBA course on corporate innovation, attended by over 60 top executives from mainland China. I’m deeply grateful to CUHK for their continued support and for empowering me to pursue teaching excellence. The ride wasn’t easy and took lots of effort, energy and enthusiasm but, most importantly, it is very meaningful.

This recognition is not just a personal achievement, but a reflection of the dedication and engagement of my fellow students and guest speakers who have been an integral part of my teaching journey. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to them for their unwavering commitment to learning and the invaluable contributions they made both during and outside of my classes.

I would also like to express my appreciation to my friends in the innovation and technology ecosystem for their support of my classes. This time, I was able to feature four renowned industry leaders who shared their perspectives on corporate innovation. These distinguished speakers included Dr. Ricky Tsui from ARUP, Eric Hui from ZurichInsurance, Kenny Sham from Klook, and Chris So from Amazon AWS. Chris was also one of my elite CUHK EMBA students graduated recently. He graciously arranged for us to visit his AWS office, where we gained invaluable insights into their innovation culture and practices. In particular, their “Always DAY ONE” culture was so inspiring and thought-provoking.

Despite the exhaustion that followed these four intensive days, we all felt a great sense of fulfillment in learning and exploring corporate innovation together through discussions, case studies, guest speaker sessions, company visits, and group projects. I have also gained immense knowledge from my elite students and have known them more as leaders, students and friends.

My students now recognize the urgency of change in the highly disruptive digital era and are aware of the gaps in their knowledge. It is now their responsibility to apply what they have learned and lead their teams to not only survive, but to seize the emerging opportunities in the dynamic and ever-evolving market.
