In the capacity of the Chief Judge of the FinTech Award of 2023 Hong Kong ICT Awards, I have shared my experience and tips on winning the hearts and votes from the judges to the participants of this year’s competition today. Thanks to The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers #HKIB to organize this fruitful mentoring session. Appreciate the leadership from Carrie Leung, the effort from Chung Wan Lam and their HKIB teammates.

Apart from my sharing, we had a panel discussion with 3 other judges and assessors of the Award including Michael Leung #BOAJacob Wai, FRM, FFA FIPA, FCMA, CSDP, MHKCS, LLM, MBA #Deloitte and Henry Chang. Thanks for Lionel #HKIB to moderate our panel discussion.

I have included one of my slides on the 12 key advices for entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs as your reference. Let me know if you would like to understand more. I am happy to share with you. I also introduced the Grand Award winners for the last 4 years where I was the Chief Judge. It includes Terence Leung #AIA鄭嘉泓 #WizpressoMiles Wen (温豪夫) #FanoLabs and Tomas Holub #CoverGo. I shared some insights on how they made it.

We also invited Kevin Leung #Liquid, the Gold Medal winner of last year, to share his experience. Kevin’s sharing was inspring. Here are my 3 picks from Kevin:

1. You are the winner already when you joined this award competition.

2. Keep trying and keep learning. He has tried several times and pivoted many times before he won the Award.

3. Speak slowly and clearly to get your key messages across deep to your judges. Keep it simple but really plant these few key points to the judge’s mind.

Met new and familiar startups and financial services leaders today as well. Wish you all have a great learning journey and all the best. See you soon in the presentation rounds. Cheers.

What a way to start our 2023! A group of elite FinTech start-ups and leaders from Hong Kong joined me for a RegTech forum today in China Construction Bank Training Centre in Hong Kong. Hundreds of CCB colleagues in various cities of China have participated it online and offline.

This was my 1st event in 2023 and was indeed a great start. Meeting good friends first time this year was just wonderful and warm especially it was f2f. Also, the forum was very fruitful to learn more about RegTech innovation, applications, challenges and best practices in different countries. We also explored how Chinese banks like CCB can leverage Hong Kong experience in regulation and compliance plus the strong drive of FinTech by our regulators and government.

Really appreciate Victor Yim #Cyberport to share his experience at the beginning and all other panel speakers 鄭嘉泓 #WizpressoEmil Chan #AereveJacob Wai, FRM, FFA FIPA, FCMA, CSDP, MHKCS, LLM, MBA #DeloitteWallace Chow #FCCAnalytics, and William Lam #FundingReach. Also, big thank for CCB Training Centre’s colleagues and my teammates’ support.

It has been three years since I visited CCB Training Centre last time because of the pandemic. Once the mainland-HK border reopens on Jan 8, 2023, I am sure we will be there more often. We all hope not just everything is back to normal, but also more FinTech collaboration and value co-creation between HK FinTech ecosystem and mainland banks.

Here you go for our third Mastermind forum this year for Sun Life Hong Kong and its financial advisors. The main theme this time was “Everyone Speaks Data” or “全民「講」數”。The last 2 Mastermind forums can be reviewed here:

We aim to inspire and encourage Sun Life colleagues and ecosystem to co-create values for their customers with data. Good panel discussion as well as interaction with the f2f and online audiences.

I am grateful to have experienced AI and data corporate leaders, entrepreneurs and consultants in town as my panel speakers, including Patrick Khong #HASEJacob Wai, FRM, FFA FIPA, FCMA, CSDP, MHKCS, LLM, MBA #DeloitteCalvin Cheng, CFA #Wizpresso and certainly our host Alex Wong #Sunlife. Really appreciate their insightful sharing. Thanks to SunLife Clement Lam Alice ChuckShirley Mak, the supporting team and my CUHK teammates today.

It takes not only IT team effort but also collaboration with data-literate colleagues at all business levels. Senior management’s determination on nurturing a data culture is very important but it is not enough. Pervasive use of data across the enterprise is the key for success. To unlock the values of data, not only IT and Data teams need to do a good job, all others need to see the values of data in their daily jobs and use data as their business language every day.

Hang Seng Bank is a great example and one of the pioneers in Hong Kong to go along this direction. Patrick is leading this change and empowering majority of their workforce on data literacy. They are also nurturing a group of citizen data scientists in different units to act as culture carrier to build, empower and sustain data culture. More here https://lnkd.in/g3PXKFYS.

Jacob and Calvin shared practical approaches to achieve this goal. Alex has also started this journey at Sun Life HK. This direction also aligns well with my vision and experience. My teammates from OpenCertHub Academy and CUHK are supporting quite a few companies in Hong Kong, including Hang Seng Bank, to empower their staff to nurture data culture, mindset and skills. To know more about our Data Literacy Empowerment Programme #DLEP, please check it out here www.ochacademy.com

Look forward to empowering more companies and talents to make smart use of data everyday.

“Banking is necessary, but banks are not” is no less influential than “Information at your fingertips” from the game changer BillGates. In 2020, Hong Kong Financial Services incumbents will be facing even more disruption from the tech giants like Alibaba & 700+ FinTech startups in HK. The 8 VirtualBanks will start launching their innovative offerings in 2020. What the incumbents & the FinTechs should do?

In the NEXX Forum in Cyberport, I had a discussion w/ Will Ross CFA from Citi & Ray Chou on the Disruption for Banking in 2020. The key takeaway is that competitions actually drive both incumbents and FinTechs to do more for the best of their customers. It implies collaboration in ecosystem. Anna Yip from Smartone shared how5G adds value to FinTech & how industry crossover & hackathons help their company to innovate for customers. Jeffrey Ng, CFA, MBA from PingAn OneConnect talked about how their technologies are helping incumbents to overcome the digital challenges & meet customer expectations. Garry Sien from Alibaba shared their experience in GBA cross-border FinTech initiatives. Barry Chan from IBM Peter Koo FCPA,CA,AICPA,CPA (Aust),CIA,CFE,CISA,CISM,CGEIT from Deloitte Emil Chan ZABank DBS shared great insight.
