Collaborative Leadership for Hong Kong’s Startup Ecosystem
Over the past decade, Hong Kong has dedicated significant efforts to nurturing its hashtag#startup hashtag#ecosystem. With the support of the government and other key players, the city has seen the rise of numerous hashtag#unicorns, some of which have even gone public. Undoubtedly, Hong Kong’s commitment to innovation and technology as a major economic driver is evident and indisputable.
However, startups in Hong Kong are currently facing a range of challenges due to the local economic climate, the lingering impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, funding constraints, geopolitical factors and more. In light of these obstacles, I had the pleasure of joining a lunch meeting with esteemed leaders in Hong Kong, including Steve Chuang, Bonnie Chan and Nicole Yuen from the Federation of Hong Kong Industries (hashtag#FHKI), Cindy Chow from Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund (hashtag#AEF), and Jimmy Tao from the FHKI Startup Council. Our aim was to discuss and address the current state of the startup ecosystem in Hong Kong, and explore ideas and actions that we can help.
I would like to extend my appreciation to Paul Yeung and Jaff Lau from hashtag#HSBC for graciously inviting us to this insightful discussion in the amazing HSBC executive platform with a spectacular view of Hong Kong CBD. HSBC has been a strong supporter of the local startup ecosystem, serving as a major sponsor for signature startup initiatives such as AEF hashtag#JumpStarter, hashtag#HKSTP hashtag#EPIC, FHKI hashtag#STARS program, and hashtag#Innopreneur Awards. I have had the privilege of collaborating with HSBC in these initiatives since my time at hashtag#Cyberport.
My collaboration with the HSBC team continues in various capacities at FHKI, HKSTP, AEF, CUHK and lately DALA – Data & AI Literacy Association hashtag#DaLa. In addition, I had the opportunity to have written and published a compelling case study on how HSBC embraces innovation to co-create value for SMEs. This case study has been widely used as a teaching resource in business schools across the globe. It serves as a remarkable example of the positive impact a large company like HSBC can have in empowering startups and SMEs, highlighting the innovative spirit of Hong Kong. If you’re interested, you can access the case study here.

I am eagerly looking forward to further collaborations with HSBC, FHKI, and AEF as we work together to strengthen and enhance the startup ecosystem in Hong Kong.
