Grateful to share with the top-notch Imperial College London Imperial College EMBA students from the UK again this year! I set the scene for the start of their China Residence Programme with CUHK Business School #CUHK, discussing the digital savviness in China, entrepreneurship among tech giants and corporates, and China’s policy and strategy. I also zoomed in on the GBA to explore opportunities and challenges for Hong Kong.

Our session was highly interactive, with students asking many insightful questions, making the class valuable for everyone. They were impressed by China’s infrastructure, digital savviness, and entrepreneurship but had concerns about data privacy, talent, and geopolitical issues, especially semiconductors.
Their active participation made me reflect on Hong Kong’s new positioning amidst recent challenges like social unrest, COVID, and geopolitical issues. Here’s what we discussed:
1. 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭:
Despite losing some talents, new schemes attract top talent from the mainland and worldwide. It’s working well. HK has many experienced businessmen and professionals while the mainland has young and well educated people. Giving some time for culture understanding, this mix will be very powerful.
2. 𝐇𝐊 𝐚𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚’𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐮𝐛:
The Central Government aims to keep Hong Kong unique, adding value and showcasing it to the world.
3. 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐬:
China has the expertise to help developing countries, making markets like ASEAN, the Middle East, Belt and Road, Africa and Latin America valuable for both the mainland and Hong Kong.
4. 𝐆𝐁𝐀 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
HK’s international practices will influence other GBA cities, serving as a testing ground for financial, regulatory, and data openness. If done right, HK will reach new heights.
It was a meaningful class, helping foreign students understand China better so we can collaborate for business and a better world. As an industry practitioner and a professor in HK, I am missioned and obligated to do this and should do more. You?
Thanks Dr Ian Mackenzie to have brought in such a group of bright students to my class.
